Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Financial Counselor to join our team at WVU Medicine. As a Financial Counselor, you will play a critical role in ensuring the financial viability of our organization by interpreting and applying financial policies, preparing and presenting fee estimates, and providing financial education to patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interview patients to determine financial counseling needs and develop plans for financial resolution
  • Use CPT codes to calculate estimated procedure costs and determine patient eligibility for Medicaid, special programs, or payment arrangements
  • Provide education to patients on their benefits, patient liability, and payment alternatives
  • Inform patients of hospital and clinic billing practices/policies and their rights and responsibilities regarding payments
  • Review completed financial statements and make determinations based on hospital policy regarding payment arrangements
  • Work with specialty departments to establish financial arrangements for elective services
  • Identify and resolve potential patient account issues for WVUH and UHA billing departments
  • Monitor daily reports to identify large dollar account balances and private pay patients that need resolution
  • Refer patients to local, state, and/or federal agencies for assistance
  • Display an understanding of third-party payor regulations related to managed care, denials, and reimbursement issues
  • Have a working knowledge of current hospital contracts with third-party payors
  • Collect deposits, co-payments, deductibles, and patient liability payments when applicable
  • Balance daily receipts and cash drawer for patient payments
  • Follow up on accounts as indicated by system flags
  • Maintain registration accuracy threshold of 98%
  • Initiate auto accident liability coverage, ERSD screening, Veterans Administration eligibility screening, Black Lung SSI screening, Workers Compensation screening, and MSP screening
Requirements
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • West Virginia state criminal background check required, and Federal, if applicable, for DHHR BMS regulated area
  • Two years' experience in a healthcare setting
  • Typing speed of 25 words per minute
Working Environment

The work environment is an office-type environment with patient care environment.

Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to accurately utilize applicable computer software and equipment for access processing
  • Demonstrates ability to follow established computer down time procedures
  • Must have reading and comprehension ability
  • Must be able to communicate effectively
  • Must be able to read and write legible in English
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Working knowledge of computers
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology
  • Basic knowledge of third-party payors preferred
  • Basic knowledge of time of service collection procedures preferred
  • Basic knowledge of business math preferred
  • Basic knowledge of ICD-9 and CPT coding preferred
  • Excellent customer service and telephone etiquette
  • Must demonstrate the ability to use tact and diplomacy in dealing with others
