The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District is seeking a part-time Special Needs Program Assistant. We are looking for dedicated, reliable, and creative individuals who are passionate about supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities. The ideal candidate will demonstrate patience and a caring attitude, with interests in gardening, fitness, and enhancing the lives of our participants.

Program Purpose

The primary aim of this program is to empower individuals with intellectual disabilities to attain greater independence. Our focus is on abilities rather than limitations, fostering a positive self-image. Activities within the program encompass computer skills, vocational training, personal health and wellness, gardening, arts and crafts, and physical fitness.

Position Details:
  • Available Positions: 1
  • Hourly Rate: $16.40 - $22.13
  • Work Schedule: Up to 18 hours per week, primarily weekdays between 8 AM and 5 PM, with potential evening and weekend shifts as needed.
  • Employment Type: Part-time, Year-round, Hourly, Non-Exempt
  • Location: Primarily at Sorensdale Center, with possible assignments at other district locations.

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor and direct oversight of the Recreation Coordinator II, the Special Needs Program Assistant will perform various duties to support the daily operations of the Special Needs Adult Day Program. Responsibilities include facilitating educational, vocational, and recreational activities for individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, promoting their educational objectives while respecting Person-Centered Thinking. Due to the diverse needs of participants, flexibility in providing support and assistance is essential.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in delivering educational instruction designed by Program Instructors to help participants achieve their educational, life skills, and social goals.
  • Lead small groups of participants in both classroom and community settings.
  • Ensure the safety of participants during program hours.
  • Encourage and respect person-centered thinking.
  • Provide personal assistance as needed, including support with self-care and hygiene.
  • Maintain information for Individual Service Plans.
  • Monitor activities, ensuring compliance with district regulations and maintaining facility security.
  • Prepare the facility for scheduled activities and events.
  • Assist with administrative tasks, including supply management and program setup.
  • Support retail operations in the on-site Thrift Store, providing excellent customer service.
  • Participate in gardening activities, including planting and harvesting.
  • Assist participants in various classroom settings, including art, cooking, and fitness.
  • Oversee participants during meal times.
  • Contribute to the implementation of ongoing programs and special events.
  • Maintain positive public relations.
  • Participate in training sessions and staff meetings.
  • Provide input on program planning as needed.
  • Demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues, supervisors, and participants.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Work Environment

This position primarily involves indoor work, with some outdoor activities as part of a team. Exposure to computer screens is expected. The work schedule may include weekends, early mornings, and evenings, with potential travel between various locations.

Physical Requirements

Employees must be able to communicate effectively, distinguish objects at a distance, sit or stand for extended periods, and lift items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma required.
  • Previous experience working with special needs populations is preferred.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification is required.
  • CA Food Handlers Certificate is required.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, Access, Outlook) is preferred.
Special Requirements:
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Completion of the Hepatitis B vaccination series is recommended.
  • Proof of negative TB Skin Test is required.
  • Background clearance is mandatory prior to employment.
  • Verification of ID and eligibility to work in the USA is required.
