Job Summary

The Assistant Activity Director is a key member of the Activity Department, responsible for assisting the Activity Director in planning, developing, and organizing activities and programs for residents. This role requires a strong understanding of therapeutic approaches and the ability to work effectively with residents, families, and staff.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in planning and implementing activity programs that meet the needs and interests of residents
  • Develop and maintain a therapeutic person-centered activity program that enhances the quality of life of each resident
  • Conduct and oversee assessments to identify resident needs and preferences
  • Complete required documentation in a timely manner
  • Communicate effectively with residents, families, and staff to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience
  • Develop and implement a volunteer program to engage residents and the community
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Activity Director
Requirements
  • High school education or equivalent
  • Three years of experience in group and individual activity programming
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English
  • Experience in marketing and communication to effectively express the Activity Program to the community and other health professionals
  • Knowledge of activity programming and the ability to communicate effectively with managers, direct care staff, families, and other stakeholders
  • Preferred associate's or bachelor's degree in Recreational Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Education, Social Services, or equivalent
  • Ability to complete the 36-Hour Basic Activity course and register within 90 days of employment
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to drive the facility bus for outings, appointments, and community events
  • Ability to work with a variety of populations requiring long-term or short-term care
  • Knowledge and ability to apply knowledge to deal effectively with the population served
  • Ability to guide and direct staff in therapeutic approaches effective with the dementia and behavioral population
  • Ability to make independent decisions in the best interest of residents, staff, and families
  • Empathy, compassion, understanding, enthusiasm, and humor to effectively interact with residents, families, and staff
  • Willingness to be flexible regarding work hours to ensure quality of care
  • Ability to manage emotional needs of self and staff
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to push, pull, or carry 50 pounds
  • Ability to move intermittently throughout the workday
  • Ability to function independently and work effectively with residents, family members, personnel, and support
  • Good health and ability to relate and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people
  • Ability to lift equipment, supplies, and occasionally move furniture
  • Exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including exposure to HIV, AIDS, and Hepatitis B virus
