Job Summary

This position plays a critical role in ensuring the health and safety of the public by monitoring the sanitation level of establishments frequented by the general public. The successful candidate will conduct thorough inspections, enforce local and state laws, and educate operators on compliance requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Evaluate and diagnose the sanitation level of facilities by inspecting food service establishments, swimming pools, and other permitted establishments.
  2. Enforce local and state laws regarding environmental sanitation inspections and inform operators of violations and enforcement schedules.
  3. Investigate sanitation complaints and foodborne illness complaints as necessary.
  4. Monitor the sanitation level of permitted establishments by conducting recheck inspections at established frequencies.
  5. Link operators to environmental court by serving violation notices and participate in the prosecution of violators.
  6. Assure a competent workforce by participating in quality control checks, standardization, and training classes.
  7. Partner with stakeholders to keep them informed of new regulations and educate the community on laws and regulations affecting public facilities.
  8. Perform other related duties as required or directed.
Requirements
  • Two years of experience in an environmental health field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in physical, biological, chemical, or environmental health sciences, or related field.
  • Ability to read and understand laws and apply them correctly during inspections.
  • Ability to explain violations and enforcement actions to operators.
  • Ability to plan a sensible workday route and work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office or similar computer software.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stoop, squat, crawl, and perform other physical duties as needed.
  • Ability to lift or pull up to 35 pounds at a time.
  • Ability to work in all types of weather.
Special Requirements
  • Valid Tennessee driver license or secure one by date of employment.
  • Access to an operable automobile and meet County requirements of automobile insurance.
  • Ability to occasionally work weekends, altered days, or hours as needed.
