Job Summary:

The Custodian I - Building Maintenance Specialist will be responsible for performing routine custodial work, including assigning and inspecting the work of employees involved in building and grounds custodial functions. This role requires heavy manual work and involves a variety of routine building cleaning tasks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Scheduling and Operations: Schedules employees to ensure adequate coverage for normal operating hours, special events, meetings, and classes.
  • Facility Management: Opens and/or closes facilities, deactivates the alarm system, and checks to ensure the facility is secure after closing.
  • Employee Supervision: Recommends termination of services for unsatisfactory custodial workers.
  • Emergency Response: Returns to the facility after hours to clean up after vandalism or other emergencies.
  • Custodial Equipment Operation: Must be able to operate custodial equipment, including buffers, burnishers, vacuums, etc.
  • Routine Custodial Tasks: Performs routine custodial tasks, including equipment operation, lifting, climbing, and following a list of items.
  • Floor Care: Scrubs and rinses floors in assigned areas.
  • Dusting and Cleaning: Damp mops a variety of rooms, including auditoriums, libraries, halls, stairs, cafeterias, kitchens, locker rooms, and mechanical equipment rooms.
  • Sanitation and Hygiene: Cleans and scrubs restrooms completely.
  • Housekeeping: Dusts rooms, offices, furniture, and cupboards, and removes cobwebs.
  • Waste Management: Empties and washes garbage cans.
  • Attendance and Punctuality: Attends work daily and is engaged and on task.
  • Overtime and Special Assignments: Performs overtime work on a scheduled, unscheduled, routine, or emergency basis, as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Education: High school completion.
  • Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment; ability to use cleaning supplies and equipment economically and efficiently; ability to keep records and make reports, order supplies, and effectively supervise a custodial team of workers.
  • Physical Demands: Good physical condition required; ability to work at high altitudes using scaffolds, ladders, etc.
  • Experience: One year of supervisory experience and previous custodial/maintenance experience in a school environment preferred.

  • Physical Demands: Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds; walking; pushing/pulling; climbing; stooping; kneeling; bending; standing; flexibility with lower and upper body; smelling; touching; talking; stamina; hearing.
  • Work Environment Hazards: Noise; fumes; grease; dirt/dust; inside/outside; working alone and with others; confined areas; chemicals; repetition; hazards.
