Job Overview:
The Automotive Service Technician is responsible for the repair and maintenance of various vehicles including automobiles, trucks, tractors, and other equipment, adhering to industry standards.
This role includes tasks such as vehicle cleaning, battery replacements, hose and line changes, flat tire repairs, wiper blade installations, and assisting customers with refueling.
Department Summary:
The University of Alabama manages a fleet of over 1000 vehicles, with approximately 250 units requiring preventive maintenance each month.
This position operates with minimal oversight while providing updates and recommendations to supervisory personnel regarding mechanical repairs and safe vehicle operations.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED with a minimum of one (1) year of experience in vehicle repair within an automotive shop.
- Completion of training at an Automotive Technical Trade Center or equivalent institution.
- Possession of personal tools is required.
- A valid U.S. driver's license is mandatory.
- Applicants must be at least 19 years old and possess a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Report.
Candidates under 21 may face certain driving restrictions. Successful candidates not currently employed by the University of Alabama will need to pass a post-offer drug screening.
Skills and Knowledge:
The ideal candidate should possess the foundational knowledge to diagnose the cause and extent of mechanical failures through various methods, including test drives, inspections, and the use of diagnostic tools.
Understanding the principles and techniques for safely transporting equipment and the associated cost benefits is essential. Responsibilities also include picking up repaired equipment from vendors and returning it to the campus.
Physical ability to lift and handle tools and equipment is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications:
One ASE certification is preferred.
