Job Summary

This position is responsible for performing basic food preparation, distribution, and related maintenance tasks in the Food and Nutrition Services department of Baltimore City Public Schools.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assemble food items such as salads, sandwiches, and box lunches, and slice meats as necessary.
  • Apply heat to appropriate foods and/or chill foods to ensure proper preparation.
  • Mix ingredients following simple instructions to create a variety of dishes.
  • Assist the Cook and/or Manager in cooking foods properly to meet daily menu requirements.
  • Handle small amounts of cash, make change per transaction, and total meal counts.
  • Provide excellent customer service by waiting on customers in a fast and friendly manner.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area by performing tasks such as cleaning tables, sweeping and mopping floors, and cleaning refrigerators and other equipment and appliances.
  • Dispose of garbage and maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Prepare and serve appropriate portions of food to meet daily menu requirements.
  • Lift, move, and store food and food service supplies as needed.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to customer service and teamwork, and promote a positive work environment.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of food preparation and safety procedures.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, and perform simple arithmetic computations.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others and promote a positive work environment.
Working Conditions

This position requires moderate physical exertion, including lifting items with and without handles up to 50 pounds, carrying items up to 150 feet, and grasping slippery, heavy, or moving objects. The employee must also be able to walk, stand, and utilize their hands for repetitive movements and tapping.
