Role Overview:
The Practical Nursing Specialist (PNS) is responsible for executing fundamental nursing duties.
Responsibilities are carried out in alignment with established protocols, guidelines, and relevant state and federal regulations. Performance is evaluated through direct consultation, outcomes achieved, discussions, and review of documentation and client service records.

Key Responsibilities:


Delivers high-quality nursing care to patients; accurately administers medication injections; conducts initial and ongoing health evaluations; records findings; monitors vital signs; ensures safety from bloodborne pathogens by following infection control policies and procedures.

Provides emergency assistance; reacts to incidents, choking; performs CPR or first aid as necessary; makes preliminary assessments of health issues and documents all actions taken.

Offers medication education and delivery to designated patients.
Initiates care tailored to the needs of program clients.

Engages with physicians, psychiatrists, and pharmacists regarding patient requirements; schedules medical appointments; informs about unusual lab results, medication refills, returns, or changes; adheres to all directives from physicians; participates in treatment team meetings; contributes to the development of patient care plans.

Collects urine samples using Universal Precautions and in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.
Initiates crisis intervention as needed to ensure a secure environment.
Records patient information in the electronic medical record system promptly and in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.
Performs related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Completion of a practical nursing program and licensure as a practical nurse; experience in a clinical psychiatric environment and/or with individuals facing chemical dependency is preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


Must possess knowledge and demonstrate proficiency in current healthcare principles and practices relevant to the PNS's patient population.

Must understand the fundamental principles, methods, practices, and procedures of nursing care, including medication administration.

Must be familiar with psychiatric medications as well as general therapeutic drugs and narcotics applicable to the patient population served.

Knowledge of first aid and CPR principles, methods, practices, and procedures.
Ability to quickly and accurately assess situations and apply sound judgment in medical or emergency intervention techniques.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with patients, family members, colleagues, professionals, and the community.

Ability to manage verbally and/or physically aggressive patients and utilize de-escalation techniques to ensure the safety and well-being of patients, family members, other patients, and staff.

Ability to communicate effectively with emotionally disturbed and mentally ill or disabled patients.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Special Requirements:

Possession of a valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and proof of personal automobile insurance if driving is required for business purposes.

Completion of mandatory background screening prior to employment if direct contact with vulnerable populations may be involved.

Completion of required training during the initial months of employment and updates as necessary.

Physical Requirements:
Mobility and ability to bend and reach during an 8-12 hour workday. Capable of lifting a minimum of 10 pounds. Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to evaluate, intervene, treat, and document patient healthcare needs. Fine motor skills for accurate charting, daily correspondence, and presentations, either manually or orally. Endurance to work 8-12 hour shifts with breaks as needed. Routine 8-12 hour shifts. Work hours and days off may vary. Additional hours may be required. Work locations may vary.
