Job Title: Refrigeration Mechanic and Equipment Technician

Portsmouth Public Schools is seeking a skilled Refrigeration Mechanic and Equipment Technician to join our team. As a key member of our facilities department, you will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of commercial food service equipment, ensuring that our schools' kitchens are safe and efficient.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on commercial food service equipment, including refrigeration units, cooking equipment, and sanitizing systems.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment issues, using technical knowledge and problem-solving skills to resolve problems efficiently.
  • Install, replace, and repair electrical controls, and recover refrigerant as needed.
  • Operate tools and equipment associated with this trade, including hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment.
  • Coordinate work with other crews from various shops as required, ensuring seamless execution of projects.
  • Estimate and procure materials, supplies, and equipment from vendors, adhering to PPS policies and procedures.
Requirements:
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by completion of appropriate apprenticeship food service equipment training.
  • Considerable experience in refrigeration, plumbing, or related trade.
  • CFC Certification is required.
  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
