Job Overview

The Air Force Research Laboratory is seeking a dedicated and skilled Mid-level Security Specialist to fulfill the role of Special Access Program (SAP) Security Officer / Site Security Representative within the Security Operations and Information Protection Branch of the Integration and Operations Division.


Key Responsibilities:


As a Government Special Access Program Security Officer, you will:

  • Provide essential program support for the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate under the supervision of the Lead GSSO.
  • Oversee the daily security management and operations of a Special Access Program Facility (SAPF) and Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF), which includes managing Personnel, Information, Industrial, and Physical Security programs.
  • Collaborate closely with the Information System Security Manager/Information System Security Officer (ISSM/ISSO) to establish and execute IT-related processes and procedures.
  • Work in partnership with program managers, scientists, and engineers to impart relevant security knowledge and expertise, ensuring the successful execution of the directorate's mission.
  • Develop and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for SAPF/SCIF management, tailoring established security policies for complex issues affecting various organizational missions.

Consultation and Planning:


Engage with the Lead GSSO and Program Managers to:

  • Establish priorities and objectives.
  • Plan and execute work to support the mission.
  • Communicate obstacles and issues to the Lead GSSO and Supervisor, recommending solutions to facilitate decision-making.

Compliance and Communication:


Interpret security guidance and policies to ensure compliance, participate in necessary inspection activities, and submit waiver requests as needed. Provide clear and concise verbal and written communication that conveys complex information effectively.


Resource Management:


Identify and request resources essential to support mission requirements. Occasional travel may be necessary for offsite meetings, training, or conferences.


Position Details:


This position is classified at the DO-2 (GS-12/13 equivalent) level. It may be filled as a 5-year Modified Term Appointment with the potential for extension or conversion to a permanent role.


Required Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Special Sensitive (TS/SCI) security clearance and Special Access.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug testing and participate in random drug testing.
  • At least 1 year of specialized experience at the next lower grade DO-1/GS-11 or equivalent.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required Department of Defense Security Professional Education and Development certifications, including Security Fundamentals Professional Certification (SFPC) and Security Asset Protection Professional Certification (SAPPC).

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience within the Air Force Research Laboratory Science and Technology community.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, fostering a culture of cooperation and teamwork.
  • Experience with Special Access Programs, Counterintelligence (CI), and the Intelligence Community (IC).
  • Experience leading security initiatives in a multi-level security environment.

Telework and Remote Work:


This position is eligible for telework opportunities as determined by agency policy. However, it is not approved for remote work outside the continental United States.
