Overview
The Department of Liberal Arts at the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy is actively seeking candidates for a tenure track faculty position in communication. We are particularly interested in individuals who possess a strong background in teaching a diverse range of communication courses, with a focus on health and interdisciplinary studies. Our commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment encourages applications from individuals representing underrepresented groups.

The College of Arts and Sciences values innovation and creativity, especially in relation to our new health science undergraduate programs: Applied Behavioral Sciences, Biopsychology, and Medical Humanities. The successful candidate will engage with students across various health science disciplines.

The Liberal Arts Department, part of the College of Arts and Sciences, currently includes seven faculty members specializing in communication, English, history, psychology, and sociology. A comprehensive list of our faculty and staff is available. In addition to the Liberal Arts Department, the College houses the Basic Sciences Department, which supports multiple academic majors aligned with health sciences.

Key Responsibilities
Primary duties will include:
  • Teaching a variety of undergraduate communication courses (e.g., healthcare communication, intercultural communication, organizational communication);
  • Developing additional elective courses as necessary;
  • Engaging in research that leads to publication and has the potential for generating grant funding;
  • Contributing service to the department, college, university, profession, and community.

Candidates should demonstrate an interest and/or capability to teach courses such as healthcare communication, intercultural communication, and organizational communication. Opportunities to create new courses related to individual areas of expertise may also be available. The position entails a nine-month contract with a teaching load of three courses per semester. The ideal candidate will maintain an active research agenda focused on health-related issues and support student researchers. Collaboration with existing faculty and potential involvement with the Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education (CIPE) is encouraged.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A Ph.D. in communication or a closely related field by the time of appointment;
  • Experience teaching various undergraduate communication courses;
  • A willingness to employ an ability-based education model with active, student-centered learning;
  • An active scholarly research program in communication;
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, with the ability to integrate these principles into teaching, research, and service;
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative spirit.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Teaching and/or research focused on health-related issues such as health disparities or health promotion;
  • Experience in an interdisciplinary educational environment;
  • Experience mentoring student research projects;
  • Participation in professional organizations at various levels;
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
