POSITION OVERVIEW:
Under general oversight, conducts both standard and advanced analytical procedures on blood and/or other biological specimens, utilizing manual methods or laboratory instruments and information systems.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Executes routine and complex biological, chemical, cytological, hematological, histological, immunological, microscopic, and/or bacteriological testing procedures on laboratory specimens, employing both manual and automated techniques along with information systems, aimed at diagnosing, preventing, or treating diseases. The Clinical Laboratory Technologist is qualified to undertake the responsibilities outlined here, and in any specific job context may or may not engage in all duties as actual responsibilities will relate to the specific assignment.
2. Utilizes expertise, training, and independent clinical judgment to take appropriate actions and/or devise solutions. Collaborates with leadership to enhance processes and address issues, including:
a) Assessing instrument performance and quality control outcomes to guarantee the accuracy and reliability of all analytical data prior to dissemination.
b) Correlating results with other laboratory data and/or clinical conditions.
c) Identifying technical, instrument, pharmacologic, and/or physiological factors contributing to unexpected test outcomes.
3. Conducts calibration, preventive maintenance, quality control, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment, instruments, and/or laboratory information systems. Following successful completion of competency evaluations, may perform processing, testing, and reporting independently.
4. Adheres to established departmental and institutional policies and procedures, including compliance, quality assessment and improvement, safety, environmental standards, and infection control. Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
5. Engages in various quality assessment and improvement initiatives, including proficiency testing, data collection for quality assurance metrics, developing and adhering to safe work practices, participating in quality improvement committees, and successfully completing regular competency evaluations. Ensures the laboratory and procedures are maintained in a state ready for inspection.
REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required.
Coursework must align with the responsibilities of the specific section Medical Laboratory discipline position and meet the educational Eligibility Routes for Medical Laboratory Scientist as outlined on the ASCP website; or possesses a categorical scientist level certification as a BB, C, CG, CT, M, MB; or has fulfilled the requirements for AAB and/or AMT certifications.
Requires six months of experience in a medical laboratory environment.
Demonstrated technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to perform laboratory functions are required.
