About the Role

At Hackensack Meridian Health, we are committed to delivering exceptional patient care and advancing our mission to transform healthcare. We are seeking a highly skilled Inpatient Coder to join our team, working 100% remotely and requiring flexible hours every weekend.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assign principal diagnosis, comorbidities, complications, and chronic conditions for Hackensack Meridian Health Inpatient cases across the network to the highest specificity.
  • Utilize ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding systems in accordance with CMS and other coding compliance regulations.
  • Abstract pertinent information from patient records and sequence diagnoses and procedures using coding guidelines.
  • Address all edits, including nosology, Exihauser, Patient Safety Indicators, and hospital-acquired conditions.
  • Apply reason/tracking code and rationale in 3M for DRG mismatches on Clinical Documentation Improvement reviewed cases.
  • Query physicians when code assignments are not straightforward or documentation is inadequate.
  • Apply present on admission indicators on all inpatient charts.
  • Stay up-to-date with coding guidelines, reimbursement reporting requirements, and new technology and procedures.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 3+ years of experience coding in an acute complex healthcare environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, and inpatient coding.
  • Encoder usage required with proficiency in computer skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite platforms.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's level degree or higher in HIM, Allied health, or another related field.
  • Certified Coding Specialist.
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or other Allied Health credential with inpatient coding experience.
