Operating Engineer

At DTE Energy, we are seeking a highly skilled Operating Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our facilities maintenance team, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining our 750 hp heat pump system and up to 500 hp gas or oil-fired low-pressure package boilers and their auxiliaries.
Key Responsibilities- Operate and maintain the heat pump system to supply both chilled and heated water to air handling units in adjacent buildings.
- Start and stop refrigeration compressors, cooling tower fans, central air handling, and refrigerating purging unit brine and water circulating pumps.
- Adjust various dampers and motor speed to gain maximum efficiency of the heat pump and maintain required temperature and water levels.
- Operate gas or oil-fired low-pressure package boilers and auxiliaries to maintain proper water temperatures and steam pressures to heat adjacent buildings.
- Take and test water samples for hardness, alkalinity, and acidity, and prepare boilers for annual inspection by city and insurance inspectors.
- Clean, inspect, repair, and test steam, water, and sediment traps, valves, filters, pumps, speed control resistors, and contactors.
- Read and record various indicating and recording instruments.
- Perform routine lubricating and minor maintenance of equipment, including replacing fuses, tightening packing glands, cleaning chiller tubes, and removing and/or plugging leaking fire sprinkler heads.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- First Class Refrigeration License.
- At least 5 years' experience in utility complex operations.
- Shift work is required, and employees will be required to perform both operation and routine maintenance of the utility complex equipment.
The physical demands of this job include frequently sitting, standing, or walking, occasionally climbing or balancing, and stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. The employee must be able to lift objects of up to 50 pounds in weight and push or pull objects up to 75 pounds in weight. The employee works in a utility plant environment and outdoors, occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, including wet and/or humid conditions, extreme heat, and may work near moving mechanical parts and/or machinery.
