Position Summary

The Bus Operator is tasked with delivering safe, dependable, and courteous paratransit and/or on-demand transportation services.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Deliver safe, reliable, and friendly paratransit and/or on-demand bus transportation services.
    1. Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections, perform equipment safety checks, and report any mechanical or operational issues.
    2. Navigate a transit bus through moderate to heavy traffic, adhering to schedules while following traffic regulations to ensure a smooth and safe ride for passengers.
    3. Provide door-to-door assistance to eligible riders.
    4. Utilize ramps and wheelchair lifts, assisting passengers with boarding, securing mobility devices, and safely exiting the vehicle.
    5. Collect fares, manage passenger stops, maintain order on the bus, and report any delays or service interruptions.
    6. Document incidents and complete necessary paperwork in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  2. Maintain professional and courteous communication with coworkers and customers while performing job duties.
    1. Engage with coworkers, passengers, and the public in a manner that fosters a positive image of the service.
    2. Provide clear and concise responses to passenger inquiries or direct them to the appropriate team member.
  3. Adhere to safety guidelines and maintain an ongoing awareness of safety practices.
    1. Understand and comply with safety rules and guidelines to achieve job objectives and prevent injuries.
    2. Wear appropriate protective equipment as required and utilize proper body mechanics while performing tasks.
    3. Identify and address potentially unsafe conditions promptly, reporting them to the responsible supervisor.
  4. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with a satisfactory driving record for the past three (3) years and experience in transportation, customer service, or commercial vehicle operation, or a combination of education and experience.

Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, a valid Class B Minnesota Driver License with passenger and air brake endorsements, as well as current DOT medical certification.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to operate a transit vehicle safely in all traffic and weather conditions.
  • Capability to pass a physical assessment, pre-employment DOT physical certification, and drug and alcohol testing.
  • Ability to interact tactfully and courteously with coworkers, passengers, and the public.
  • Capacity to understand and execute both oral and written instructions and complete reports.
  • Proficiency in reading and speaking English clearly; bilingual skills are a plus.
  • Flexibility to work varied schedules, including evenings, early mornings, and weekends.
  • Ability to maintain a valid Class B Minnesota Driver License with necessary endorsements and current DOT medical certification.
  • Familiarity with the geographic area of St. Cloud.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate and maintain relationships with all levels of staff and to manage escalated situations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical or community college education, or two (2) years of post-secondary education.
  • Experience in public transit.
  • Experience working with individuals with diverse physical and cognitive abilities.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  1. This role involves driving Dial-a-Ride buses, requiring extended periods of sitting and moderate periods of standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
  2. Exposure to temperature extremes and limited exposure to noise and physical hazards may occur.
  3. Regular use of personal computers, onboard fare systems, communication technology, and two-way radios is required.
