Overview:

Under the guidance of a registered nurse, the Surgical Technologist II plays a crucial role in the surgical team, ensuring the safe and efficient execution of invasive surgical operations. The primary duties of the Surgical Technologist include preparing and maintaining a sterile environment, passing instruments, and assisting the surgeon within their professional scope.

Qualifications:

A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with graduation from an accredited surgical technology program or licensure as a Practical Nurse in New York State. Candidates must possess nationally accredited certification or be eligible for certification. A minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Surgical Technologist is essential. The role demands advanced knowledge and proficient practice in the first scrub role for a majority of surgical procedures, complemented by strong interpersonal skills and a focus on collaborative teamwork.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Exhibit advanced knowledge and proficient practice in the first scrub role across various surgical procedures, adhering to the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) Code of Ethics.
  • Apply expertise in advanced surgical techniques and emergency protocols.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills to anticipate the perioperative needs of both patients and surgeons.
  • Engage in collaborative decision-making with peers regarding surgical patient care.
  • Participate in ongoing education and training to enhance professional practice.
  • Maintain certification through continuous education activities.
  • Display professional behaviors and skills within the surgical environment.
  • Follow through with assigned tasks and instructions.
  • Assist the perioperative team in ensuring a safe care environment for patients and staff, utilizing safe patient handling techniques to minimize occupational injury.
  • Employ appropriate personal protective equipment and adhere to policies outlined in the exposure control manual.
  • Minimize fire risks by practicing safe work habits and understanding personal responsibilities in the event of a surgical fire.
  • Maintain a clean and safe workspace, taking precautions against hazards associated with infectious and non-infectious waste.
  • Apply aseptic principles to sterile technique practices.
  • Perform hand antisepsis in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Utilize sterile techniques when donning gowns and gloves, assisting others as needed.
  • Create and sustain a sterile field in line with AORN guidelines.
  • Inspect items for proper processing and packaging before introducing them to the sterile field.
  • Recognize and address any breaches in sterile technique promptly.
  • Demonstrate competencies in decontamination, high-level sterilization, and immediate-use sterilization.
  • Differentiate between non-critical, semi-critical, and critical items.
  • Select appropriate sterilization methods based on manufacturer instructions.
  • Operate sterilization equipment according to manufacturer recommendations, documenting each cycle accurately.
  • Possess knowledge of relevant anatomy, pathology, surgical procedures, and surgeon preferences.
  • Prepare and update information regarding surgeon preferences.
  • Collect and identify specimens as directed by the surgeon, ensuring clear communication with the RN circulator.
  • Participate in counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments to prevent retention of foreign bodies.

Salary Range: $20.21-$29.31/hour PLUS an additional $10/hour with Certification Compensation is determined by experience, skills, and education. Pay may vary within the stated range based on location.
