Job Overview

The City of Greenville is seeking a highly skilled and experienced High-Voltage Transmission Specialist to join our team.

Job Summary

As a High-Voltage Transmission Specialist, you will be responsible for building, maintaining, and troubleshooting GEUS overhead and underground transmission, distribution, secondary, and service facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform duties with minimal supervision, occasionally requiring guidance from higher levels of authority.
  • May be assigned by the Line Supervisor to act as a crew leader in "on-call" and after-hours.
  • May be assigned by the Line Supervisor to temporarily act as a Line Foreman.
  • May be assigned by the Line Foreman to act in their place during temporary absences.
  • If assigned as a crew leader, responsible for the allocation of work, the safety of, and the quality of work, and for policy compliance of those for whom he/she is responsible.
  • Know, understand, and follow all GEUS safety rules and policies.
  • Work safely at all times to protect self, other crew, the public, GEUS property and equipment, and personal and public property from injury or damage.
  • Participate in job briefings (tailboard discussions) for each job as described in the GEUS Safety Manual.
  • Attend and participate in safety and training meetings.
  • Subject to on-call duty and emergency response after normal working hours.
  • Provide advice, guidance, and training to subordinate personnel.
  • Be knowledgeable and proficient at wiring and installing transformers, capacitors, reclosers, street lighting, and other associated electrical equipment.
  • Scope of work (voltages, complexity of work, etc.) is allowed to work on energized three-phase primary voltages, with supervision.

Requirements

  • Class A CD
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Specialized training and certification equivalent to Journeyman Lineman level in the trade
  • Climbs wooden poles and must be able to perform Pole-top Rescue and Bucket Rescue
  • Possesses basic knowledge of electric theory and how electricity is manipulated and utilized in a power system
  • Must be qualified to work on or near energized electrical equipment
  • Can distinguish exposed live parts from other parts of electrical equipment
  • Is able to determine the nominal voltage of exposed live parts
  • Is and be knowledgeable of proper clearances and working distances and corresponding voltages
  • Has a thorough understanding of policies, procedures, and regulations applicable to the Engineering and Operations Department
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the operation of aerial lift devices, digger-derricks, backhoes, trenchers, and other GEUS tools and equipment
  • Minimum of four years of successful performance as Apprentice Lineman

Work Environment

  • Works at heights of up to 150' above the ground
  • Able to lift a 10' crossarm, weighing 88 pounds from floor to chest height; return crossarm safely to floor
  • Safely generate push and pull forces of 65 pounds
  • Ascend and descend a 5-rung ladder 20 times, without exceeding 85% of Maximum Permissible Heart Rate (Karvonen formula)
  • Lift and carry 88 pounds

Estimated Salary

The estimated annual salary for this position is between $75,000 and $100,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
