Key Responsibilities

As a Lead Park Ranger Supervisor, you will oversee daily park operations and manage the execution of various responsibilities related to training and leadership. Your role will involve supervising GL-9 permanent and seasonal law enforcement rangers, non-commissioned personnel, and park volunteers. You will be tasked with detecting criminal activities, investigating violations, and making custodial arrests. This includes preparing and executing warrants, interviewing witnesses, and detaining suspects. You will also ensure the completion of detailed written reports and supervise the collection of law enforcement, security, and intelligence information pertinent to the park and its visitors.

In this role, you will establish work objectives and guarantee that all staff receive necessary training promptly. You will identify operational needs and provide recommendations to your supervisor regarding programming, budgeting, training, administration, and operational evaluations. Additionally, you will schedule patrols to enhance visitor interactions, particularly in areas requiring special attention. Your responsibilities will also encompass leading complex law enforcement, emergency medical, and search and rescue operations, as well as providing emergency medical assistance to park visitors and residents.

Employment Conditions:

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Appointment is contingent upon a background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Must meet Selective Service Registration Act requirements for males.
  • Subject to pre-employment physical and drug testing.
  • Must possess a Type II or higher Law Enforcement Commission.
  • New employees must designate a financial institution for direct deposit of net pay within 30 days of starting work.
  • Individuals currently holding or having held a General Schedule position under non-temporary appointment must meet time-in-grade requirements.
  • Must carry a firearm while performing duties and maintain firearm proficiency.
  • Must be free of any domestic violence convictions.
  • Required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative result prior to appointment.

Physical and Medical Requirements:

  • Must be determined physically fit by an authorized government physician to perform strenuous duties.
  • Must pass a medical examination, including vision, hearing, cardiovascular, and mobility assessments.
  • Required to operate a government vehicle; a valid driver's license is necessary.
  • Must comply with National Park Service uniform standards.
  • May be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, and shifts.
  • New employees or supervisors must complete a one-year probationary period.
  • May need to travel overnight for work-related purposes.

Qualifications:

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Credit will be given for all relevant experience, including volunteer work. Applicants must possess, or be able to obtain, a valid Type II or higher National Park Service Law Enforcement Commission by the specified date. Additionally, applicants must meet at least one of the following qualifications:

  • Experience: At least one year of specialized experience comparable to the GS/GL-09 level in the Federal service.
  • Education: Completion of three full years of graduate-level study leading to a Doctorate in relevant fields.
  • Combination: A combination of education and experience as described above.
