Position Overview:
Reporting to the Vice President of Health IT, with a direct connection to the Chief Operating Officer, the Executive Director of IT at Johns Hopkins Hospital serves as the principal IT authority. This role involves close collaboration with local business, clinical, and academic leaders to formulate and execute strategic initiatives that align with the overarching objectives of the organization, in conjunction with the Johns Hopkins University and Health System Office of Information Technology.

The Executive Director is tasked with spearheading IT strategy, infrastructure planning, and overseeing IT support across both acute care and outpatient environments. This position acts as the primary liaison for all IT matters at JHH, managing both direct and indirect IT infrastructure support, while leading a local team dedicated to the implementation of innovative technologies and the ongoing maintenance of local IT services.

In partnership with central IT leaders, this role carries matrixed responsibilities for all local IT operations, including desktop and mobile support, networking, and telephony services. Collaboration with central IT leadership is essential to ensure the delivery of high-quality, reliable services. The Executive Director will lead large-scale, complex projects that necessitate multidisciplinary coordination and substantial operational, clinical, and IT collaboration.

Key Responsibilities:


As a vital member of the Johns Hopkins Hospital leadership team, this role contributes to or leads strategic and tactical planning efforts aimed at achieving organizational objectives by prioritizing initiatives and coordinating the assessment, deployment, and management of current and future technologies.

Effectively communicates and advocates for entity-specific requirements across central IT while also conveying central IT initiatives and priorities throughout the organization.

Plays a pivotal role in enterprise IT initiatives, including the dissemination of best practices, evaluation of new technologies, and leadership of enterprise-wide projects that necessitate implementation per entity, while taking ownership of enterprise-wide systems.

Responsible for overseeing the formulation, maintenance, and execution of IT resilience and downtime strategies for the region, including the management of downtime drills and related corrective action plans. Acts as the regional lead during IT downtime incidents.

Develops technological solutions that anticipate the organization's needs, ensuring they are cost-effective, reliable, and compatible with both existing and emerging technologies. Demonstrates agility in responding to evolving technology requirements.

Utilizes an understanding of organizational goals, mission, and culture to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of technology, ensuring alignment with the organization's needs. Balances available personnel and funding resources to meet both operational and strategic objectives, addressing significant issues with decisive leadership.

Collaborates with stakeholders alongside other IT leaders to interpret customer business needs and recommends strategic investments in technology, applications, and personnel that align with the organization's goals. Serves as the entity liaison for clinical applications.

Provides guidance in the development of technology-related policies and procedures, representing IT on business-driven policy committees both within and outside of the organization. Ensures compliance with applicable policies, practices, and regulatory requirements within the scope of responsibility.

Represents Johns Hopkins Hospital, often with delegated authority, in various meetings, advocating for the organization's interests at industry, state, and federal forums.

Manages customer relationships and satisfaction, ensuring adherence to contractual obligations while fostering a culture of exceptional customer service.

Facilitates and influences organizational strategic initiatives to achieve mission and operational goals, maintaining relationships with key technology vendors.

Directly responsible for the design, development, and application of a portfolio of Johns Hopkins Hospital applications, as well as shared responsibility for technical solutions that meet customer needs and are essential for the organization's ongoing operations.

Ensures the continuous delivery of IT support and services through effective management of service level agreements. Oversees the development and monitoring of IT budgets across the Hospital, managing current and projected capital and operating budgets, and initiating corrective actions when necessary.

Provides input for ongoing operations, budgets, multi-year forecasts, and strategic and operational planning, maximizing cost control through continuous evaluation of resource allocations to achieve or exceed financial plans.


Education & Experience:

Bachelor's Degree in information technology, business, or a related field is required; an advanced degree is preferred. A minimum of ten years of progressive experience in information technology or a related field is required, including at least seven years of management experience with significant business impact, demonstrating proven experience in leading large-scale, complex projects that support the organizational strategic plan.


Skills:

Ability to establish strategic direction and commit to long-range goals and short-term initiatives. Advanced leadership, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills are essential for managing and motivating staff and resources in alignment with organizational goals.

Demonstrated exemplary customer service skills and strategic thinking capabilities. Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills are necessary for interfacing with various levels of management, including senior leadership and high-level external contacts.

Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, prioritize multiple activities, and respond promptly to numerous requests in a complex, highly collaborative setting. Capable of managing sensitive and confidential information and situations.

Professional demeanor in both formal and informal situations, with the ability to represent the organization at state, federal, and industry panels.


Knowledge:

Extensive knowledge and ability to manage and operate large-scale technology infrastructures (greater than 100,000 customers) and execute strategic planning objectives. Advanced conceptual understanding of technologies across all areas of the Johns Hopkins Medicine organization.

Strategic business acumen and comprehension of organizational strategy, with the ability to design information systems that fulfill that strategy. Familiarity with current systems analysis and design methodologies, as well as IT and healthcare operations.

Experience in assessing a wide range of information solutions and products, along with demonstrated knowledge of leadership, conflict resolution, and change management principles.


Salary Range:
Minimum $231,758 annually
  • Maximum $256,422 annually.
Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.
