JOB TITLE:
Sterilization Technician

REPORTS TO:


The following outlines the general duties, responsibilities, and competencies deemed essential for fulfilling the primary functions of this role and should not be viewed as an exhaustive list of all tasks associated with this position.


POSITION SUMMARY:


The Sterilization Technician/Courier is primarily responsible for the effective collection, processing, and sterilization of surgical instruments, as well as their transportation to and from various health center locations.

This role adheres to established procedures for biological monitoring of sterilizers in accordance with regulatory and health center standards. The technician is accountable for the daily review, compliance, and upkeep of all sterilization and biological monitoring documentation. Additionally, they ensure Sterility Assurance through the application of appropriate chemical and biological indicators and verification of sterilizer parameters.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Preparing medical instruments and equipment for decontamination
  • Operating machinery to clean, disinfect, and decontaminate surgical instruments and medical devices
  • Inspecting instruments and equipment for any signs of damage or wear
  • Unpacking, verifying, and stocking new medical equipment and instruments
  • Delivering supplies and equipment to various health center locations
  • Responding to urgent supply requests during surgical operations
  • Maintaining records related to sterilized instruments and sterilization procedures
  • Monitoring environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity, in storage areas
  • Preparing and packing decontamination equipment
  • Tracking inventory of sterilized equipment
  • Reporting any issues with sterilized equipment and conducting pre-use testing
  • Managing sterilization supply inventory, checking expiration dates, and reordering as necessary


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Certification in sterile processing and distribution
  • Extensive knowledge of infection control best practices and hazardous waste management
  • Ability to perform well under pressure
  • Attention to detail for monitoring conditions, inspecting equipment, and overseeing decontamination
  • Strong technical skills and problem-solving abilities
  • Good critical thinking and judgment
  • Capability to handle sensitive equipment
  • Proof of up-to-date immunizations
  • Ability to remain stationary and upright during shifts and to lift items weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Two years of experience in ambulatory surgical sterilization processes is advantageous

You must possess the willingness and ability to travel regularly, and if working in specific counties, a valid driver's license and a clean driving record are required.
