The Control Systems Engineering Specialist will oversee the secure, efficient, and dependable design, configuration, and upkeep of process automation systems at the Phillips 66 Research Center.

This role primarily focuses on Honeywell Experion Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and OPTO Industrial Control Systems, alongside custom control applications and relevant IT network management and security.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver engineering services for process control systems to diagnose, analyze, and guide the safe resolution of control system issues.
  • Provide expertise and support for Controls Modernization and Automation Projects, which include specifying process control systems, hardware and software design, testing, graphics, commissioning, start-up, and documentation.
  • Utilize specialized knowledge to implement necessary changes to enhance the safety, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of control system technologies to fulfill research requirements.
  • Identify and rectify safety risks or system deficiencies that lead to downtime or inefficient operations.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to determine automation system needs and design systems that fulfill those requirements, while staying informed about system upgrade necessities.
  • Supervise contract labor involved in the construction or enhancement of automation systems.
  • Review specifications, estimates, and approval documents for control system projects to navigate projects through funding, design, configuration, and installation stages.
  • Engage and collaborate with various operational, maintenance, and engineering teams in a cooperative environment while being self-driven to achieve personal objectives.
  • Offer expert support to assist field technicians with maintenance tasks, including during nights, weekends, or holidays when necessary.
  • Work alongside Information Technology experts to ensure robust network security.
  • Champion the adoption and dissemination of process control 'best practices' through internal and external networking.
  • Lead the organization through internal control network audits, including preparation, engagement with auditors, and addressing identified action items to successful resolution.

Required Qualifications:
  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country.
  • Associate's degree in a relevant technical field.
  • Familiarity with IT network management.
  • Relevant knowledge of instrumentation and/or process/industrial control system configuration, programming, maintenance, and security.
  • Ability to interpret process flow diagrams, Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), loop sheets, interlock matrices, and instrumentation and electrical schematics.
  • Proficient in MS Office Products (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, Visio, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology.
  • Practical knowledge and experience with company and industry standards and regulations.
  • Experience in the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and related equipment in a refinery or petrochemical setting.
  • Demonstrated capability to program, configure, and integrate automation technologies such as field sensors, Programmable Logic Controllers, data communications, human-machine interface design, and other electrical machinery, including wireless applications.
  • Able to design and execute programming, troubleshoot, and repair interlock logic, PID loops, control logic, and control ramps (temperature, pressure, flow, etc.).
  • Skilled in designing, configuring, troubleshooting, and correcting DCS graphics.
  • Experience with DCS alarm management and prioritization.
  • Knowledge of process equipment such as compressors, motors, pumps, and controllers/indicators for flow, level, pressure, and temperature.
  • Experience maintaining local control network security within the broader corporate network.
  • Ability to drive change through individual contributions or team involvement.
