Within a mortar squad, section, or platoon, your role will encompass a variety of demanding tasks, including the potential for airborne operations to establish mortar positions in strategic locations. You will also be responsible for identifying and neutralizing enemy explosive devices.

Career Progression

As you enhance your skills, your responsibilities will expand. Experienced team members will have the opportunity to supervise and mentor fellow Soldiers, lead mortar squads, and provide tactical and technical direction to junior personnel. Senior Indirect Fire Infantrymen are tasked with executing combat orders, directing troops in both offensive and defensive scenarios, and managing indirect fire support operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Set up, load, and operate various types of mortars
• Engage in offensive, defensive, and retrograde ground combat operations
• Maintain, clean, and store automatic weaponry
• Deploy, fire, and recover anti-personnel and anti-tank mines
• Conduct reconnaissance missions to identify enemy troop positions and artillery sites

Essential Skills

• Excellent physical and mental fitness

The teamwork, discipline, and leadership skills acquired as an Indirect Fire Infantryman will significantly benefit your future career, whether in federal, state, or law enforcement, or in any civilian field you choose.

Compensation and Training

Instead of incurring costs to acquire these skills, you will earn a salary while training. In the Army National Guard, you will gain valuable expertise while receiving a regular paycheck and qualifying for educational assistance.

Following 10 weeks of Basic Training, where you will learn essential Soldiering skills, you will participate in 14 weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT). This training will combine hands-on simulated combat exercises with classroom instruction, ensuring you maintain proficiency through frequent squad drills, target practice, and tactical exercises.
