Department Overview

The Gas Operations team is dedicated to maintaining the safe and dependable delivery of natural gas to our clients. This department oversees all facets of gas distribution and transmission operations, which include planning, engineering, maintenance, construction, restoration, and emergency response.

Position Summary

This role is represented by IBEW Local 1245, an organization with over a century of experience advocating for employees at PG&E. This position is subject to collective bargaining agreements.

The Electric Locator is a skilled professional with Journeyman Electrician qualifications, responsible for the accurate, safe, and efficient identification of underground utilities, including electric and gas lines. This role also involves standby responsibilities when contractors are excavating near essential PG&E infrastructure. Key duties include completing necessary documentation and serving as a liaison to third-party contractors, customers, and private landowners. Additionally, the Electric Locator may perform gas locate and mark duties as needed alongside electric locate and mark assignments. While standby work for non-company construction jobs is primarily handled by Gas Compliance classifications, the Electric Locator may be called upon to assist if additional resources are required and if DOT operator qualifications are met. The damage prevention tasks and activities are not limited to this classification. Electric Locators must complete initial and annual training to maintain their qualifications.

This position is intended to fill vacancies in the Bay Area region, with available roles planned for various locations.

Note: This position is a DOT (Department of Transportation) covered classification and is subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening.

According to Letter of Agreement 16-28, Electric Locators are committed to this classification for a period of 24 months.

Compensation

PG&E provides the hourly rate that the company believes it might pay for this position at the time of posting. This role is subject to collectively bargained hourly wage rates and increases. The starting wage rate for this position is $62.91 per hour, specific to the job's locality. This rate is influenced by various factors, including skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity.

Job Responsibilities

  • Completes necessary documentation and acts as a liaison to third-party contractors, customers, and private landowners.
  • Performs standby duties when contractors excavate near critical PG&E facilities.
  • Conducts accurate, safe, and efficient locate and mark duties for underground utilities, including electric and gas.
  • Engages in DOT-Operations/Maintenance and Emergency duties.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a High School diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid California Class C Driver's License.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to drive safely in all weather and road conditions.
  • Willingness to work extended hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Completion of an IBEW/Joint Apprentice Training Committee (JATC) sanctioned Electrician training program.
  • Must be able to wear company-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous military experience.
  • Electrician Journey certification.
  • Manhole safety training.
  • Experience in PG&E construction or utility operations.
  • Five years of journey-level experience in industrial electrical construction.
  • Experience with electronic or mechanical equipment.
  • Instrumentation and control experience.
  • Electrical experience with substations or power generation.
  • High voltage experience.
  • Experience with testing equipment and troubleshooting.
  • Prior experience with utility locating and marking.
