The Transit Law Enforcement Investigator is responsible for conducting comprehensive law enforcement and investigative activities within the Regional Transportation District. This role involves managing a variety of criminal cases and probing incidents reported to the department or identified by law enforcement personnel. The investigator collaborates with police officers, forensic specialists, evidence handlers, and witnesses to construct cases for prosecution. This position may alternate between investigative and enforcement duties.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Core Duties:
  • Engage actively with community members and colleagues to build trust and educate the public on legal matters and police procedures.
  • Exhibit leadership within the community to facilitate problem-solving initiatives.
  • Employ independent judgment in managing routine and high-risk situations while adhering to safety protocols.
  • Devise investigative strategies and techniques; collect, assess, and safeguard evidence, analyze findings, and prepare detailed reports and visual aids to support legal proceedings.
  • Draft reports and field notes; compile investigative summaries with recommendations for case management; participate in ongoing professional development; attend briefings and training sessions; maintain department-issued equipment.
  • Prepare legal documents such as affidavits for warrants and subpoenas, serve involved parties, and respond to civil litigation; provide testimony in court as needed.
  • Stay informed about local laws, evidence rules, crime prevention methods, and current investigative practices.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent; a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field is preferred.
  • Must be at least twenty-one years old.
  • Possess or be eligible for a valid driver's license.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic mathematical proficiency.
  • Familiarity with forensic testing and evidence collection.
  • Quick decision-making abilities and excellent reflexes.
  • Knowledge of courtroom procedures and law enforcement regulations.
  • Colorado P.O.S.T. Certified or eligible for certification.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident eligible for citizenship.
  • Currently employed as a certified peace officer with a local, county, or state law enforcement agency (excluding corrections or detention officers).
  • Three years of full-time experience in patrol or related law enforcement roles.
  • Two years of full-time experience in criminal investigations for a local or state agency.
  • Bilingual skills or proficiency in American Sign Language is preferred.
  • Experience with CCTV operations and video analysis is preferred.

Compensation Range:
$71,000 - $100,348.50 annually
