Public Counsel is a nonprofit public interest law firm dedicated to advancing civil rights and promoting economic justice. Our mission is to amplify the power of our clients through comprehensive legal advocacy.
We operate eight legal projects, including the Federal Pro Se Clinic, which provides high-quality legal assistance to individuals litigating their federal civil actions without legal representation. Our staff and volunteers work tirelessly to promote healthy and resilient communities through education and outreach, and support community-led efforts to transform unjust systems through litigation and policy advocacy.
About the Federal Pro Se ClinicThe Federal Pro Se Clinic is a critical component of Public Counsel's Consumer Rights & Economic Justice project. Our clinic provides a safe and supportive environment for pro se litigants to receive guidance and representation in federal court. Our staff attorneys work closely with volunteer lawyers and law students to provide comprehensive legal assistance to those in need.
Job SummaryWe are seeking a highly motivated and experienced staff attorney to join our Federal Pro Se Clinic team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in federal civil procedure and a passion for public interest law. The staff attorney will be responsible for providing procedural and substantive legal advice to pro se litigants, reviewing and analyzing federal pleadings, preparing court documents, and supervising a legal assistant.
RequirementsTo be considered for this position, applicants must have a J.D. and be a member of the California Bar. At least one year of legal experience is required, with a strong background in federal civil procedure and a familiarity with the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and the Central District of California's Local Rules. The ideal candidate will also have excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
