Job Summary

The Associate Director of the Office of Design and Construction at Colorado School of Mines is a key leadership position responsible for providing architectural and engineering technical support to campus departments. This role involves managing individual projects, supervising staff architect/project managers, and ensuring that the department assists campus clients through the various steps and processes necessary to successfully complete construction projects.

Responsibilities
  • Provide design and professional architectural and engineering services, project and construction management
  • Provide expertise on matters related to design and construction
  • Directs and participates in the development of project schedules and monitors progress to ensure timely completion of projects
  • Directs and participates in the analysis and definition of project budgets and plans
  • Monitors project development to ensure budget and schedule compliance
  • Develops RFQ, RFP and bid language for solicitation of professional services and construction services
  • Reviews, evaluates and critiques proposals to ensure fair, accurate and compliant awards of contracts
  • Evaluates justification for additional services to contracted design services
  • Negotiates fair and appropriate costs for additional services
  • Monitors, reviews and identifies areas of project risk for department projects, formulate plans to mitigate risk or recover from impacts to schedule and budget
  • Evaluates and negotiates change orders on construction contracts
  • Coordinates and recommends activities associated with project assignments, short- & long-term planning, risk management and evaluations and disciplinary actions for 5-7 assigned personnel
  • Assists Director with formulating and implementing policy, recommending changes, establishing objectives and goals and assisting with professional development for ODC staff
  • Assesses performance of department projects, reviews PM staff performance and makes recommendations for improvements
  • Provides recommendations to the Director regarding personnel issues including hiring, disciplining, mentoring, coaching and goal setting
  • Provides superior customer service to internal and external ODC customers by understanding the programmatic needs of customers and translating them into completed projects in a timely manner
  • Works cohesively with all units of Infrastructure and Operations staff to support the overall mission of the organization
Requirements
  • BS degree in Architecture, Engineering or Construction Management or other design related discipline
  • Ten years of related experience with a proven track record of providing excellent customer service to internal and external clientele in the area of design and construction
  • Five (5) years progressively responsible management experience with both projects and professional staff
  • Proficiency of use of the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent Customer Service and communication skills
  • Flexibility and problem-solving skills with the ability to proactively anticipate needs, and successful experience working well under deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Colorado Office of the State Architect policies and procedures
  • Familiarity with the State of Colorado or public higher education capital and operational processes and procedures
  • Experience with complex projects on institutional campuses
  • Experience negotiating disputes, change orders and settlements with construction contractors
  • Competency in AutoCAD or Revit
  • Licensed Architect or Engineer
