About the Role:
Agate Housing and Services is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Associate Controller to join our team. As a key member of our finance department, you will be responsible for overseeing the processing of all transactions, including grant and contract billings, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll-related transactions, and account reconciliation processes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage the current team within the Accounting Department, providing guidance and support to ensure the successful completion of tasks and projects.
- Plan and oversee month-end close, annual audit, and other financial compliance needs, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Lead the preparation of financial statements, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, accounting standards, and internal controls.
- Assist in analyzing financial performance metrics, trends, and variance, providing actionable insights and recommendations to drive informed decision-making.
- Develop and monitor internal controls and process improvement initiatives to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of our financial operations.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with departments to support business initiatives and drive financial performance.
- Drive the documentation of policies and procedures to ensure consistency and compliance.
- Manage and develop accounting staff, providing training and guidance to ensure their success.
- Assist in strategic leadership and direction for the accounting function, including financial planning and analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
- Evaluate, implement, and manage accounting system updates and possible add-on tools to enhance our financial management capabilities.
- Contribute to business initiatives, investment opportunities, and cost-saving strategies to optimize Agate's financial stability.
- Protect the organization's value by maintaining confidentiality of sensitive materials and information.
- Stay up-to-date with industry developments and best practices by participating in education opportunities.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.
- A minimum of five to seven (5-7) years of accounting experience.
- Experience managing and developing staff.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles (GAAP, non-profit, etc.), financial reporting (including 990), and budgeting processes.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving skills, self-motivated, and detail-oriented.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, work independently, and meet deadlines.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficient using accounting software and MS Office tools.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive materials and information.
Preferred Qualifications:
- CPA certificate and license.
- Accounting or Finance experience in a non-profit setting, particularly around Grants and Contracts.
- Federal (Single) Audit experience.
- Two or three (2-3) years experience managing and developing staff.
- Knowledge of, or experience with Sage Intacct.
