The Registered Nurse is responsible for providing professional nursing care, oversight of individual plans of care, and preliminary and ongoing health assessments for inmates and detainees within the Barnstable County Correctional Facility. The successful candidate will also function as an information resource to staff on health issues.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide care and custody, instruction, and health-related teaching of inmates detained or sentenced to the Barnstable County Correctional Facility.
• Perform initial and ongoing nursing assessments and provide treatment, teaching, and/or referral to medical providers in accordance with facility-established Nursing Protocols and Medical provider orders.
• Document assessments and interventions in accordance with providers' orders and nursing standards.
• Complete documentation as required by facility and practice standards.
• Perform Sick Call triaging inmate requests for medical and mental health needs.
• Directly provide and/or ensure inmate ongoing education regarding their medical conditions, diagnosis, management of such, and prevention of complications and healthy life strategies.
• Assist and collaborate with the providers and nurses regarding sick call needs and all aspects of patient care.
• Communicate with the Director of Health Services, medical provider, and Shift Supervisors to ensure medical conditions are treated and considered in facility processes.
• Provide emergency medical care and triage (in collaboration with HCP when able) within the scope of nursing practice to inmates and staff when needed.
• Maintain the confidentiality and accuracy of all inmate residents' medical records.
• Assist in ordering, receiving, returning, and accounting for medications from the pharmacy and assist in communicating the need for stock items to the Director of Health Services.
• Distribute medications in accordance with medical providers' orders, BCSO policies and procedures, and nursing standards.
• Communicate inmate health issues with healthcare providers, mental health clinicians, other nursing staff, Dir of Health Services, and security staff as needed.
• Develop, implement, evaluate, and modify plans of nursing care for all inmates.
• Supervise care provided by Licensed Practical Nurses, EMTs, and Medical Assistants to overseeing inmate individual plans of care.
• Coordinate all special medical diets with healthcare providers and food service staff.
• Review all health-related documentation from external sources and collaborate with the medical provider regarding external consult/providers recommendations for changes in care.
• Deliver instruction on general health and wellness topics to inmates in individual and/or group settings.
Requirements:
An Associate's degree in nursing or a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Science is required. Licensure by the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Nursing is required. CPR certification is required. A minimum of two (2) years of experience in nursing is required. A minimum of one (1) year of experience working in a correctional facility and/or substance abuse or detox nursing is preferred but not required. Ability to work a weekend and holiday rotation is required.
Work Environment:
This position requires working within the Barnstable County Correctional Facility. This position requires working with individuals currently incarcerated at the Barnstable County Corrections Facility.
