POSITION OVERVIEW

Vanguard-IP is seeking a qualified individual to fulfill the role of a Patent Agent or Associate, focusing on the intersection of scientific innovation and intellectual property law.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Doctorate in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Immunology, or a closely related biological discipline.
  2. Extensive research experience in areas such as cell biology, gene therapy, structural biology, or immunology.
  3. Admission to the USPTO or relevant bar association is mandatory; post-doctoral experience is preferred.
  4. Strong familiarity with the life sciences sector.
  5. A strategic mindset with a keen interest in the advancement of cancer therapies and vaccines.
  6. Experience in IP litigation or prior clerkship/judicial internship is preferred for associate roles.
  7. Proficiency in patent drafting and searching, particularly within a law firm environment for agents.
  8. Exceptional ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences, including both scientific and non-scientific stakeholders.
  9. Demonstrated excellence in scientific writing, including the ability to analyze and articulate abstract scientific concepts and synthesize extensive scientific literature into clear, concise summaries.
  10. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain meticulous attention to detail.
  11. Proven ability to collaborate effectively within team settings.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Evaluate scientific literature, patents, and patent applications across various biological fields, including cell biology, cancer biology, immunology, genetics, and molecular biology. Provide insightful critiques and assessments of scientific data related to inventions.
  2. Conduct thorough searches for relevant scientific articles, patents, and patent applications pertaining to inventions.
  3. Perform detailed analyses comparing inventions with existing technologies.
  4. Identify critical elements and features of inventions.
  5. Draft patent applications that include a comprehensive overview of the invention's field, detailed descriptions of its essential features, and clearly defined claims.
  6. Prepare responses to patent application rejections from the United States Patent and Trademark Office and other international patent offices, including thorough analyses of cited references and persuasive arguments for patent approval.
  7. Conduct freedom-to-operate and patentability assessments based on prior art references and patent documents; prepare and review information disclosure statements for submission to the USPTO and foreign jurisdictions.
  8. Collaborate with colleagues on various projects, adapting to different team dynamics, and effectively presenting ideas and conclusions.
  9. Engage with clients in the prosecution of patent applications, asking pertinent questions to clarify the unique features of inventions and responding promptly to client inquiries.
