Position Overview
Summary:
The Clinical Nurse (RN) is responsible for delivering both direct and indirect nursing care to patients or groups of patients.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Patient Assessment: Conducts comprehensive admission assessments to establish a clear understanding of the patient's condition. Maintains detailed documentation that integrates the care plan, interventions, and outcomes, reflecting the patient's physical, mental, and emotional health. Reassesses patients regularly and completes necessary transfer or discharge documentation, ensuring a thorough evaluation of the patient's ongoing needs.
2. Medication Administration: Adheres to the five rights of medication administration, clearly communicating with patients and their families about the medications being administered. Evaluates the patient prior to medication delivery, considering allergies, vital signs, potential side effects, and effectiveness, while providing pain management as required. Identifies high-risk medications and utilizes reference materials as necessary.
3. Ensuring Patient Safety: Evaluates patients for potential safety risks upon admission and follows hospital protocols to mitigate these risks. Initiates appropriate interventions based on identified risk factors.
4. Patient and Family Education: Assesses the educational needs of patients and their families, planning and delivering suitable instruction using effective teaching methods. Documents responses to educational efforts.
5. Delegation of Duties: Implements the five rights of delegation, coordinating and supervising nursing care delivery while maintaining accountability for delegated tasks. Clearly defines the roles and responsibilities of team members involved in patient care.
6. Leadership: Fosters a positive work environment through exemplary personal conduct and teamwork. Takes on the charge nurse role, demonstrating independent problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills. Proactively addresses staffing needs in relation to patient acuity and census, and assists in the orientation and training of new nursing staff.
7. Care Delivery: Complies with Nursing Standards of Practice, including assessment, care planning, interventions, and evaluation of care plans. Practices in accordance with unit-specific standards.
8. Additional Responsibilities: Performs other duties as assigned and fulfills all compliance obligations related to the position.
Education Requirements:
Associate's Degree in Nursing is required.
Other Information:
Licensure to practice in the relevant state is mandatory. Experience ranging from zero to six months is acceptable.
Preferred Qualifications:
Basic Cardiac Life Support (CPR) certification within three months of hire is desired. Additional certifications may be required based on unit standards.
Working Conditions:
Manual Skills: Significant manual dexterity and coordination are necessary.
Occupational Risks: The role involves considerable occupational hazards.
Physical Demands: The position requires very heavy physical effort, with the ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force.
Physical Environment: The work environment may include exposure to various conditions, including dirt, odors, and noise.
Credentials: Required certifications include ACLS, ENPC, PALS, RN, and TNCC.
