Job Title: Janitor

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Janitor to join our team in the Engineering Services Division at the Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico.

Job Summary:

The Janitor will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and organization of all Observatory buildings, including offices, hallways, restrooms, elevators, stairways, shops, and other work areas. This will involve sweeping, scrubbing, waxing, and polishing floors, washing windows, door panels, and sills, emptying wastebaskets, and transporting trash and waste to disposal areas.

Responsibilities:
  • Cleaning offices, hallways, restrooms, elevators, stairways, shops, and other work areas
  • Performing grounds keeping duties such as litter control, sweeping sidewalks, and trash collection
  • Securing gates, sounding alarms, or calling the police or fire department in case of fire or unauthorized presence
  • Permitting authorized persons to enter the property
  • Communicating warnings safely
  • Ensuring the security of all buildings and grounds by patrolling the site for safety and security
  • Reporting any unusual or suspicious activities on the site to supervisory staff
  • Examining doors and windows to determine that they are secure
  • Watching for and reporting irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes, and security doors left unlocked
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • One month of relevant experience and/or training
  • Effective decision-making ability
  • Ability to communicate orally and/or using sketches or drawings
  • PC experience with email, word processing, and data entry
  • Valid driver's license by the start date of employment
