POSITION SUMMARY:

This role involves skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the operation of Heavy and Light Duty Trucks, Tractors, and various small power tools necessary for the upkeep of the Aircraft Operating Area, airport grounds, access roads, parking areas, walkways, and internal road systems. Responsibilities include maintaining runways, taxiways, air-carrier ramps, and other airfield areas and structures in accordance with FAA regulations. The operator ensures that the airfield remains free from hazards that could affect aircraft safety.


Shift Schedules:

Crew 1: 07:00 AM - 3:30 PM

Crew 2: 3:30 PM - 11:30 PM

Crew 3: 11:00 PM - 07:30 AM

(Shift assignments are determined by availability and organizational requirements.)

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following tasks are representative of the duties required for this position but are not exhaustive:

  • Operates various vehicles including Front-End Loaders, Dump Trucks, Mowers, and Heavy Equipment with attachments to clear snow and ice from runways, taxiways, air carrier ramps, and other airfield surfaces.
  • Requires proficiency and experience in operating Heavy Equipment, including Snowplows, Snow Blowers, and Brooms, while adhering to airfield snow removal protocols.
  • Operates Tractors, Graders, Brush-hogs, Bulldozers, Backhoes, Trenchers, Flail Mowers, and other machinery used for maintaining access roads, grasslands, slopes, wetlands, and drainage ditches.
  • Utilizes Jackhammers, Concrete Saws, Crack Sealing Equipment, and Asphalt Rollers to repair, remove, or replace damaged pavement and joints on runways, taxiways, air carrier ramps, parking lots, roadways, walkways, access roads, and other airfield/land-side surfaces.
  • Operates paint striping vehicles and walk-behind paint stripers to mark walkways, parking lots, roadways, and all surface lines and safety markings.
  • Conducts daily inspections of all vehicles and heavy equipment prior to use.
  • Repairs fences, gates, and other airport security features.
  • Removes wildlife and other hazards from the airfield.
  • Performs general maintenance tasks such as trash collection, pavement cleaning, and power washing of grounds, ramps, and parking structures.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED, along with a minimum of three years of experience operating Heavy Equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and understand all safety rules, regulations, and requirements related to the work.
  • Ability to interpret manufacturers' operating manuals for heavy equipment, vehicles, and hand-held tools.
  • Basic knowledge of landscape and grounds maintenance practices.
  • Basic understanding of pavement maintenance and repair techniques.
  • Skill in using manual and power tools commonly employed in landscape maintenance and the removal and repair of concrete and asphalt pavement.
  • Ability to operate two-way radios and other communication devices.
  • Working knowledge of standard vehicle repair and maintenance practices.
  • Prior experience in airfield maintenance is preferred.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

  1. Candidates must pass the required FBI fingerprint-based criminal history record check, as well as pre-hire and random drug and alcohol screenings.
  2. Employees in this role must possess and maintain a valid Michigan Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements. Those without a valid CDL class B with Airbrake Endorsement at the time of hire must obtain one within twelve months of hire. Maintaining a valid CDL requires continuous physical ability to pass the necessary physical examination and participation in random drug testing.
  3. Employees are required to be available and on-call 24/7 to respond to airport emergencies and seasonal weather conditions.
  4. Employees must be willing to work overtime and are required to fulfill any scheduled or unscheduled overtime as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to enter and exit all trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to raise, lower, position, and attach auxiliary equipment and components with or without mechanical assistance.
  • Must be able to operate two-way radios, steering mechanisms, vehicle controls, and levers simultaneously.
  • Must be able to kneel and bend to access vehicle components, paving and joint components, and other airfield features.
  • Must possess sufficient dexterity to use manual and power tools effectively.
  • Must have adequate visual acuity to identify vehicles and objects on runways and taxiways, and to read diagrams and schematics.
  • Must have sufficient auditory acuity for effective communication using cell phones and two-way radios.
  • Must be able to tolerate exposure to various chemicals and airborne contaminants.
  • Must be able to work in close proximity to high-voltage power sources and moving mechanical hazards.
  • Must be able to endure inclement weather and extreme temperatures.
  • Must be able to wear protective clothing and equipment as required.
