Job Summary:

The Obstetric Surgical Technician plays a crucial role in delivering exceptional care to obstetrical and newborn patients. This position involves direct patient interaction and specific administrative tasks under the guidance of a Registered Nurse.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the care of obstetrical and newborn patients, including personal care and ambulation support.
  • Facilitate the safe transfer of patients between stretchers, beds, and operating tables.
  • Manage the distribution of fresh water and ensure linen carts are stocked.
  • Support the transfer of newborns and mothers to the appropriate units as required.
  • Handle specimens and ensure they are sent to the lab or pathology as needed.
  • Prepare delivery rooms as instructed by the Labor & Delivery RN.
  • Maintain cleanliness of instruments and ensure proper organization in case carts.
  • Restock necessary equipment and supplies in delivery rooms and operating suites.
  • Act as a scrub technician during procedures.
  • Provide clerical support as necessary.
  • Ensure safety and security protocols for maternal and newborn patients are upheld.
  • Adhere to patient identification procedures.
  • Engage in ongoing education and competency development.
  • Deliver care within the defined scope of practice in various units, including NICU and mother-baby units.
  • Communicate any concerns or issues promptly to the RN.
  • Notify nursing staff of urgent situations requiring immediate attention.
  • Understand dietary restrictions and special diets as directed by the RN.
  • Provide accurate reports to the RN and other healthcare team members.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Experience in surgical assistance and operating room procedures is preferred. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential. Completion of an in-house Care Partner Orientation program is required.

Education:

A high school diploma or equivalent is mandatory. Graduation from a certified surgical technician program is required.

Additional Information:

Individuals in this role may encounter human blood and other potentially infectious materials. Adherence to universal precautions and infection control policies is required.
