About the Position

The Hospice Physician plays a vital role in creating and overseeing the medical component of each patient's plan of care. As a key member of the interdisciplinary team, this physician is responsible for medical oversight for each patient, working collaboratively to provide high-quality Hospice care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Certify patient eligibility for Hospice care upon admission and at the beginning of each subsequent benefit period.
  • Act as attending physician for patients without a primary physician, providing all legally required orders for care and signing death certificates as needed.
  • Provide medical leadership and oversight to ensure competent and appropriate delivery of Hospice services.
  • Participate in the development, evaluation, and revision of plans of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Collaborate with team members to resolve care conflicts and ethical dilemmas.
  • Make medically necessary visits and assist in face-to-face encounters as required.
  • Provide leadership in pain and symptom management, ensuring state-of-the-art care for patients.
  • Participate in the development of standing orders, clinical protocols, policies, procedures, forms, quality improvement monitors, and service programs.
  • Represent the Hospice program through communication with physician colleagues and advocate for Hospice care.
  • Participate in community education programs for healthcare professionals and the public.
Requirements
  • Board certification or eligibility in Hospice and Palliative Medicine is preferred.
  • Licensure as a Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy in the Commonwealth of VA is required.
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to participate in direct clinical practice.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in Hospice care is required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of hospice philosophy and pain and symptom management.
  • Ability to work within diverse social and economic situations without imposing personal values.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills are essential.
Physical and Cognitive Requirements
  • Ability to continuously stand and walk, frequently squat, climb stairs, bend to the floor, reach over the shoulder, kneel, twist, sit, lift patients, and remain in uncomfortable positions for prolonged periods.
  • Visual acuity to note changes in patient condition and read medical instruments.
  • Hearing acuity to auscultate BP, hear verbal instructions, and respond to emergency alarms.
  • Concentration and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work effectively under stress and maintain a professional demeanor.
