Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Donor Center Nurse to join our team at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. As a key member of our blood and platelet collections team, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient collection of blood products from volunteer donors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Screen prospective whole blood and apheresis donors and perform physical examinations using standard interview forms and/or donor computer software.
  • Obtain donor samples for determination of laboratory values and draw pretest, retest, and other blood samples as assigned.
  • Perform phlebotomy, drawing whole blood units, and participate in off-site blood collection as needed.
  • Maintain accurate record keeping and data collection using manual and computer methods.
  • Supervise designated collection staff as directed and perform blood component harvesting using cell separators.

Requirements:

  • An Associate's Degree in Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, or a Master's Degree in Nursing is required.
  • Current license to practice professional nursing in Iowa is mandatory.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills, are essential for success in this role.
  • General computer skills and the ability to function with a high degree of autonomy while collaborating within a multi-disciplinary team are also required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years of acute care nursing experience.
  • Previous experience using electronic medical records.
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures.
  • Experience working in a blood donor or apheresis center.
