Job Summary

BWXT is seeking a skilled CNC Machinist/Programmer to join our team. As a CNC Machinist/Programmer, you will be responsible for setting up, processing, and inspecting bearings and bearing components using manual and numerically controlled milling, turning, EDM, and grinding equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Generate, assemble, and inspect bearings and bearing components.
  • Verify and inspect all features using appropriate inspection methods.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, operating sheets, sketches, and other related technical data to determine tooling requirements, setup procedures, control settings, and machining method and sequences.
  • Mount, align, and secure tooling, attachments, and work pieces on machines.
  • Select and install cutting tools in machine spindles.
  • Load control media, such as tape, cards, or disks, in machine controllers or enter commands to retrieve programmed instructions from databases.
  • Calculate and set machine controls to position spindles in relation to work pieces and regulate factors such as cutting depth, speed, feed, and coolant flow.
  • Input SPC information as defined by the engineering community to establish and maintain process controls.
  • Start machines and monitor displays and machine operations to detect malfunctions or deviations.
  • Stop machines to change cutting tools and setup according to required machining sequences or to measure parts for conformance to blueprint specifications.
  • Enter commands or manually adjust machine controls to correct malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining.
  • Operate machines manually to perform non-automated functions and when automatic programming is faulty or machines malfunction.
  • Discuss control media errors with supervisors or programming personnel to resolve problems.
  • Clean machines, tooling, and parts.
  • Perform machine maintenance, housekeeping, and other duties as assigned by supervision.
  • Develop, evaluate, and improve manufacturing methods, processes, tools, gauges, and fixtures.
  • Ability to set up and operate manual and CNC milling, turning, and grinding equipment.
  • Perform maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment, fixtures, and gauges.
  • Capable of being trained to develop N/C programs during setup using 'M' code, 'G' code, Mazatrol, or Esprit software for EDM.
  • Meet all contractual quality requirements, including inspection methods and techniques required to meet final blueprint drawings.
  • Must have the ability to train other technicians on manual and CNC equipment.
  • Ability to move material and racks.
Requirements
  • Two years of set-up and operation of CNC milling, turning, and grinding equipment.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Ability to demonstrate CNC control abilities, including editing speeds, feeds, tool offsets, and fixture offsets on milling, turning, EDM, and grinding equipment.
  • Capable of being able to develop NC programs during set-ups using 'G' code, 'M' code, Mazatrol, or Esprit software for EDM.
  • Demonstrate above CNC abilities on a test piece.
  • Read and interpret complex blueprints and interpret geometric tolerancing per ANSI Y14.5.
  • Demonstrate the use of various measuring instruments, including dial bore gauges, indicator snap gauges, verniers, and 0.0001 micrometers.
  • Possess skills necessary to maintain accurate documentation and the ability to follow complicated procedures and document accordingly.
  • Possess the knowledge and ability to use multi-axis grinding contouring as well as grinding wheel dressing and grit/size selection to ensure that tight tolerances meet blueprints.

  • Proficiency in GD&T.
  • Proficiency in G-Code.
  • Proficiency in M-Code.
  • Machine setups for production runs.
