Position Details:
This role offers a competitive compensation rate of $40 per hour.

WORK SCHEDULE:
8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Emory University Hospital

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the guidance of the Chief Radiation Therapist, the Radiation Therapy Specialist executes treatment and simulation protocols as directed by the Radiation Oncologist. Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting radiation treatment and simulation procedures in alignment with the Radiation Oncologist's directives and departmental standards.
  • Documenting simulation setups and procedural details meticulously.
  • Preparing and administering IV and oral contrast as required.
  • Performing point-of-care testing for pregnancy and in preparation for IV contrast administration.
  • Setting up treatment rooms and equipment according to prescribed plans, including the placement of immobilization devices and verification of treatment parameters.
  • Communicating procedures to patients, addressing their inquiries, and providing reassurance before and after treatments.
  • Carefully transferring patients to treatment tables, ensuring the safety of IVs and catheters.
  • Maintaining accurate patient markings and adjusting them as per physician instructions.
  • Documenting treatment in accordance with departmental protocols and keeping the physician informed of any necessary adjustments.
  • Acquiring and analyzing digital radiographs of treatment areas.
  • Observing radiation safety protocols for both patients and staff.
  • Constructing patient positioning and immobilization devices to ensure consistency in daily treatments.
  • Operating CT simulation units and associated equipment, including power injectors and model construction tools.
  • Assisting in specialized procedures such as HDR, Stereotactic Radiosurgery, and Implants.
  • Evaluating images for technical quality and proper positioning.
  • Conducting initial setup checks to ensure consistency and congruence between treatment plans and prescriptions.
  • Monitoring patients visually and audibly during therapy sessions for any unusual reactions.
  • Utilizing sound judgment to inform the physician of any concerns regarding the patient's condition prior to treatment.
  • Reporting significant information to supervisory personnel.
  • Collaborating effectively with all members of the patient's care team, including radiation oncologists, physicists, dosimetrists, nurses, and social workers.
  • Scheduling patient treatments to enhance departmental efficiency and patient convenience.
  • Reporting any changes in patient conditions or adverse reactions to the Radiation Oncologist or Nurse.
  • Assisting in the orientation and training of new staff to ensure proficiency with therapy-related equipment.
  • Supporting the training and supervision of radiation therapy students in accordance with departmental guidelines.
  • Assisting with the upkeep of departmental facilities, equipment, and supplies, and reporting maintenance needs to supervisors.


QUALIFICATIONS:
Level I - Completion of an accredited Radiation Therapy Technology program.
Must be registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or eligible for registration.
Less than 3 years of experience as a radiation therapist.
If registry eligible, must pass the registry exam within 6 months of employment.
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification in accordance with the American Heart Association is required.
