About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Water Discipline team at Colliers Engineering & Design. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for managing projects related to the repair, upgrade, and replacement of hydroelectric turbines, generators, and auxiliary systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage projects for the repair and/or upgrade or replacement of hydroelectric turbines, generators, and auxiliary systems.
  • Lead or assist in the design effort for upgrade/replacement of hydroelectric auxiliary mechanical systems.
  • Lead or assist in the design effort for gate operating equipment on or near the water (locks, dams, water control gates, moorings, etc.).
  • Direct the development of bid documents (plans, Specs, and Cost estimates).
  • Develop or provide input on design effort for proposals.
  • Mentor junior staff.
  • Review/edit/write technical reports.
  • Review/edit/write technical specifications.
  • Develop design criteria for projects.
  • Oversee teams of drafters to prepare design drawings.
  • Perform QA/QC by verifying design methodology, calculations, outcomes, etc.
  • Perform vendor shop inspections and audits.
  • Lead field inspections and surveys in support of repair, design, and construction efforts.
  • Develop design alternatives.
  • Assist project managers and leaders as needed in the creation of proposals, client information, and designs.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Professional engineer licensure preferred (or desire to become licensed).
  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, with emphasis on rotating equipment and auxiliary mechanical systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of rotating equipment (pumps, turbines, generators).
  • Knowledge in the design of auxiliary mechanical systems (cooling water, lube oil, compressed air, HVAC).
  • Knowledge of large gates, cranes, and valves will be a plus.
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and how to apply them to design of mechanical systems and equipment.
  • A desire to work on a variety of project types.
  • A desire to work in a collaborative team environment to learn from and teach others.
  • A desire to work hands-on such as field and manufacturing shop inspections.
  • CAD skills are a plus.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Work on US Army Corps of Engineers projects or familiarity with Corps' design guidelines is a plus.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job-related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.
