Job Summary

The Underwriting Specialist will play a critical role in the determination of rate development for all group UW cases at GeoBlue. This position requires the application of complex underwriting concepts to develop and refine rate models, as well as the ability to advise and participate in the refinement and expansion of these models.

Key Responsibilities
  • Analyze health information from group applicants using commercially consistent underwriting guidelines to ensure accurate and compliant rate development.
  • Manage communication of underwriting requirements and decisions with sales personnel to ensure seamless sales processes.
  • Develop and maintain proficiency in the use of all department underwriting software to optimize rate development and underwriting processes.
  • Analyze rating software methods and make recommendations for expansions or improvements to department underwriting software to enhance rate development capabilities.
  • Understand the competitive position of quotes and develop mechanisms for financial comparisons to inform rate development decisions.
  • Train assistant personnel in department processes and practices relative to group underwriting to ensure knowledge transfer and consistency.
  • Track and manage exception provisions with financial implications to the company to ensure accurate rate development.
  • Mentor junior-level personnel to develop their skills and knowledge in underwriting and rate development.
  • Direct compilation of all data necessary for audit of department activities to ensure compliance and accuracy.
  • Ensure compliance with domestic and international insurance laws and regulations to maintain GeoBlue's reputation and integrity.
  • Document department activities and develop underwriting guidelines for department control processes to ensure consistency and accuracy.
  • Coordinate salesforce changes, fixes, and enhancements under the direction of the Director – Underwriting Operations to ensure seamless sales processes.
  • Represent underwriting as a subject matter expert for projects to provide guidance and expertise.
  • Maintain department file systems to ensure accurate and compliant record-keeping.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the Underwriting team and GeoBlue's goals.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 2 years' experience with health insurance underwriting procedures.
  • Desire to work in the international health insurance industry.
  • Strong analytic skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines.
  • Expert in Excel.
  • Internet speed of at least 75 Mbps (standard high-speed internet access).
Working Conditions
  • Flexibility to work in an office and/or at-home, remote office environment.
  • Schedule flexibility may be necessary to attend key business/departmental meetings and/or perform certain business-critical job functions outside of normal working hours.
  • Physical demands: ability to communicate internally and externally through receiving and responding to auditory and visual methods.
