Berkeley, California, United States HTC America Full time
About the Team

HTC America's Creative Labs is a global team of designers, artists, engineers, and researchers that delivers design strategy and incubates new products and experiences for the HTC portfolio. This team is responsible for much of HTC's most significant design work over the past decade.

Our current focus is on creating next-generation XR software and hardware experiences for the HTC VIVE brand. Our process relies on the collaboration of exceptionally talented individuals to create products that offer functional benefits and emotional resonance to our target audiences.

About Your Next Opportunity

As a Visual Designer on the VIVE Creative Labs Team, you will work closely with a team of UX designers to define differentiated software features and initiatives in the XR industry. You will be focused primarily on defining new design systems and designing visual explorations from low-fidelity to high-fidelity.

You will work closely with a small but nimble team of designers, researchers, planners, and engineers to realize your design solutions as in-headset, interactive prototypes.

Responsibilities
  • Design and iterate through visual experiments and use visual design as a primary mode of communication.
  • Develop visual concepts and direction through iteration — starting with low-fidelity mockups and gradually increasing fidelity as concept becomes more complete.
  • Communicate design vision to team members, cross-functional teams, and executives via high-fidelity imagery, storyboards, videos, presentations, and other assets.
  • Collaborate with other designers and prototypers to bring XR designs to life across VIVE product offerings.
  • Create high-fidelity UIs with clear hierarchy and legibility.
  • Coordinate with a multi-disciplinary team to mature design concepts from a napkin sketch to interactive prototypes.
  • Craft thoughtful design principles and systems to inform and guide design decisions.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Graphic Design, HCI Interaction Design, or relevant field (or comparable experience).
  • 8+ years of experience designing experiences and interfaces for software products.
  • Experience working with a multi-disciplinary team of designers, researchers, planners, and engineers.
  • Experience implementing visual design systems across platforms in an iterative software development environment, applying design tools (e.g. Figma, Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch).
  • Visual design skills, including an experience understanding of typography, composition, color theory, and design principles.
  • Experience working at every stage of the design process — from user research, ideation, workflow definition, hi-fi mocks, and design prototypes.
  • Hi-fidelity visual design is your UX superpower.
  • Strong time management and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing for VR/AR/XR or other spatial experiences.
  • Film editing, motion, and animation — Premiere, After Effects, or similar.
  • 3D software experience — Unity, C4D, Blender, Maya, Spline, or similar.
  • UX and Interaction Design experience beyond conventional 2D web and mobile applications.
We Should Get to Know You If:
  • You're curious, driven, and passionate about innovating and pushing the limits of new and emerging technologies.
  • You're user-focused — you know how and when to ask the right questions to fully understand and empathize with users' problems before diving into design solutions.
  • You can balance an appropriate mix of the ideal and pragmatic in your design work.
  • You're excited to tackle ambiguity head-on and have the experience and toolset to deliver innovative solutions to unfamiliar challenges.
  • Your passion for UX and visual design inspires others and will contribute to shaping and growing the VIVE Creative Labs design studio culture.
  • You get inspiration from many different avenues beyond technology design.
  • You're collaborative by nature — you work well with others and thrive when designing hand-in-hand with others.
  • You can internalize feedback and build on alternative perspectives to iterate on and improve your design solutions.
  • You can focus on near-term needs without losing sight of long-term goals.
  • You are comfortable and capable of contributing at every stage of the design process.
  • You're a capable storyteller who can package an idea, communicate the core elements of design, and why it matters for the end user.
Working Conditions
  • Primary work location is indoors.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working at a computer.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and long periods of detailed work with VR equipment.
  • The employee is regularly required to sit.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
