Job Title: Firefighter

Join the City of High Point, NC team as a Firefighter, responsible for performing routine protective service work in fire suppression, hazardous materials, and emergency medical rescue. As a Firefighter, you will work under emergency conditions and frequently involve personal hazard.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Respond to emergency calls and perform firefighting and rescue operations.
  • Load, unload, carry, and connect fire hoses of various sizes.
  • Remove, carry, position, and climb ladders of various lengths.
  • Provide ventilation openings in hazardous locations and/or position using manual or mechanical means.
  • Force entry into inaccessible locations and extricate from entrapment using manual or mechanical means.
  • Use self-contained breathing apparatus and enter hazardous and/or toxic atmospheres.
  • Search hazardous locations for persons trapped or disabled and remove to safety.
  • Perform EMT-B level functions and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Use ropes to hoist, lower, and secure persons and/or equipment using various knots.
  • Perform property conservation measures during fires and/or environmental emergencies.
  • Identify tool location and proper use on assigned apparatus.
  • Proper maintenance of tools assigned to apparatus.
  • Knowledge of components, cleaning, and basic air management.
  • Knowledge of fire behavior.
  • Proper selection and use of portable extinguishers.
  • Assist with public education and fire prevention classes.
  • Perform daily cleaning and care of the fire stations and grounds.
  • Install and maintain smoke detectors in the community.
  • Perform other related and non-related activities within the scope of firefighter's knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Requirements:
  • Formal Education: Graduation with High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Successful completion of the Recruit Academy.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships through written or oral communications.
  • Understanding of local, state, and federal regulations and OSHA requirements.
  • Certifications: Must have or be able to obtain North Carolina or National Registry EMT certification within one year from date of employment.
  • Must have valid appropriate North Carolina Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • English and Spanish Language skills.
Physical Requirements:

Must meet medical and physical requirements of NFPA 1582.

Physical Surroundings: The Firefighter is subject to working inside or outdoors. Position is subjected to various weather conditions, (sleet, snow, ice, rain, wind, extremely hot or cold) whenever emergencies occur or performing regular duties.

Hazards: The Firefighter may be exposed to trash, debris, numerous chemicals, smoke, combustible and flammable materials, various gases, body fluids or other hazards.

Machinery/Tools/Work Aids/Other Equipment: Emergency response vehicles, self-contained breathing apparatus, ropes, hoses of various sizes, ladders of various lengths and weights, axes, sprinkler systems, tools and aids used in the control and containment of fires, hazardous materials and medical emergencies, hand tools, trucks, communication equipment, respiratory protection, computer, calculator, printer/fax/copy machine, measuring devices, manuals, ordinances, Personnel Resolution, regulations, reports, evaluations, records, correspondence, periodicals, reference materials, statutes, building codes, telephone, regular office supplies and other work aids related to the job.
