Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Gas Engineer I to join our team at Spire. This role will assist the Engineering Manager and Field Operations in designing and estimating construction projects for the replacement of existing natural gas facilities and the construction of new ones.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and estimate construction projects for gas facilities, including pipeline design and estimation.
  • Coordinate designs with GIS Analysts, Environmental Engineering, System Planning, Right of Way, Pipeline Safety and Compliance, Field Operations, and outside companies.
  • Record and track improvement plans from preliminary to final stage through construction.
  • Assist in daily coordination, assignment of work, and oversight of GIS Analyst and Construction Engineers.
  • Work on special projects, including bridge crossings, railroad crossings, and design non-normal services.
  • Specify and procure non-stock material required for main and service work.
  • Review design and cost estimates for main and service work, including delivery pressures and justification of proposed main work.
  • Handle calls and correspondence regarding job status and projects.
  • Prepare necessary paperwork related to company procedures for gas main and service work.
  • Attend utility meetings and pre-construction meetings to negotiate with representatives from engineering firms and municipalities.
  • Attend site meetings to resolve specific issues or conflicts with company facilities and proposed improvements.
  • Schedule and prioritize projects going to construction or with higher priority due to company requirements.
  • Ensure effective utilization of company's Geographical Information System (GIS) and asset management system to manage capital construction design work.
  • Ensure use of company's standards and applicable State and Federal codes and regulations for all design work.
  • Ensure all work is performed in a safe, compliant, and cost-effective manner to maximize system integrity, reliability, and value to customers.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited school required.
  • Engineering in Training certificate preferred.
  • Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum 0-2 years' engineering experience in natural gas or similar industries.
  • Knowledge of project management techniques and proven ability to lead across functional teams/work across functional areas to achieve mutual goals.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and ability to deal effectively with both internal peers, staff of acquired entities, and third-party service providers.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and use of Spire's systems such as Maximo, OBIEE, Oracle, Sharepoint, and Asana.
Work Environment

Work is normally performed in a shared, open-office environment. Hybrid in-office/remote work schedule. Work hours are typically 7:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. An additional 20 hours may be required per month to complete necessary work in areas of responsibility that fall under this position. Overnight travel is required to visit various work locations and attend business functions. Up to 20% travel required.
