Chief Curator and Director of Academic Art Programs

The Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) at the University of Rochester is seeking a visionary leader to serve as Chief Curator and Director of Academic Art Programs.
Reporting directly to the MAG Board of Managers, this dynamic individual will provide strategic vision and leadership in advancing the MAG's collections, exhibitions, and educational programs. They will also be responsible for identifying and implementing opportunities to expand the gallery's reputation regionally, nationally, and internationally.
The ideal candidate will have a solid art history background, a creative approach to art museums, and excellent managerial experience. They will be able to shape and articulate a strategic vision for the MAG, possess superb skills in fundraising, financial management, audience development, and decision-making, and serve as the organization's spokesperson to all constituencies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide outstanding leadership in curating exhibitions that showcase the MAG's diverse collections and promote a culture of equity, inclusion, and excellence throughout the institution.
- Identify and implement opportunities to expand the MAG's reputation through partnerships with academic institutions, museums, and other cultural organizations.
- Maintain an organizational culture that is collegial in nature, attracting, retaining, and motivating a diverse, highly qualified staff and corps of volunteers.
- Cultivate significant financial support from donors, foundations, and government agencies to advance the MAG's mission and goals.
- Expand ties to the philanthropic, governmental, university, and civic communities, promoting the MAG's visibility and reputation as an exceptional cultural, economic, community, and university resource.
About the Ideal Candidate:
We are seeking a seasoned museum professional with a passion for art, education, and community engagement. The successful candidate will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be able to work effectively in a collaborative environment, and demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Requirements:
An advanced degree in art or art history, museum education, arts management, or a related field is preferred. Deep professional and leadership experience in a comparable setting will also be seriously considered. Salary range: $200,000 – $250,000. Excellent benefits package included.
