The UFW Foundation is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Managing Attorney to lead our Immigration Legal Services Program. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing oversight to our assigned team, providing affirmative immigration relief services, and representing clients in deportation proceedings.
Key Responsibilities- Provide oversight to assigned team members, including staff attorneys, legal assistants, and fellows.
- Develop and implement a service delivery model that maximizes limited resources in rural communities and leverages relationships from urban centers.
- Collaborate with other department leadership and staff members to ensure broad program development.
- Support group processing events and workshops.
- Develop and deliver community legal education presentations and outreach activities.
- Attend triage meetings to screen potential clients.
- Provide direct representation and assistance to detained and non-detained individuals in removal proceedings.
- Represent unaccompanied minors before USCIS, EOIR, and California state courts.
- Review criminal dispositions and analyze immigration consequences.
- Provide zealous representation, conduct legal research, and formulate legal strategy.
- Identify trends in DHS practices and community needs to inform advocacy efforts.
- Prepare and submit applications, legal briefs, and supporting documentation for immigration relief.
- Support trainings and technical assistance to UFW Foundation staff, interns, fellows, volunteers, and partner organizations.
- Regular travel to court hearings, community colleges, and UFW Foundation service centers.
- Support UFW Foundation's fundraising goals.
- Work closely with Staff and Directing Attorneys to maximize case output.
- Licensed attorney in good standing with admission to practice in any US state.
- 3+ years of experience with practicing immigration law, including representation of clients seeking humanitarian relief.
- 2+ years of experience with supervising volunteers or staff.
- Experience working with vulnerable populations.
- Demonstrated cultural competence and cross-cultural communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and under supervision.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
- Analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Bilingual (English and Spanish or English and indigenous language or English and other language as needed to meet communities' needs).
- Collaboration skills and ability to work with teammates in a professional and solutions-oriented manner.
- Dedication to immigrant and farm worker rights.
- Detail-oriented and strong writing and oral skills.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in both Spanish and English.
- Problem-solving/analysis and results-driven.
- Valid driver's license, access to an automobile, insurance, and willingness to drive to off-site locations.
- Previous experience working with the immigrant community and 2-3+ years of experience with supervising legal staff.
- Accruals of 2, 3, and 4 vacation weeks per year depending on tenure.
