Position Overview
The Genetic Counseling Support Specialist plays a vital role in assisting healthcare professionals, including genetic counselors, physicians, and nursing staff, under the guidance of the lead genetic counselor. This position is essential for ensuring that patients receive comprehensive care throughout their genetic counseling journey.
Key Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Genetic Counseling Support Specialist include, but are not limited to:
- Preparing patient cases by gathering family histories, medical histories, and pertinent medical records and laboratory reports prior to patient appointments.
- Ensuring that all necessary medical documentation is available to clinical staff before patient visits.
- Assisting in the preparation of documentation for genetic counseling sessions and evaluations.
- Securing preauthorization for genetic testing and related medical services.
- Monitoring the status of genetic test results and communicating with laboratories to follow up on delayed results.
- Under the supervision of genetic counselors, reaching out to patients with normal genetic results and accurately documenting these conversations in the electronic medical record.
- Performing administrative tasks such as faxing, filing, mailing, and supporting educational and administrative projects.
Required Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, psychology, or a related field. A combination of education and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with standard office equipment.
- Ability to communicate professionally with clinical, operational, and administrative staff.
- Strong interpersonal skills and organizational abilities are essential.
- Commitment to adhering to clinic standard operating procedures and participating in quality and safety initiatives.
- A genuine interest in pursuing a career in human genetics, genetic counseling, or healthcare.
- Previous experience in a medical environment is preferred.
