Position Overview
The GMTO Corporation is seeking a skilled Opto-Mechanical Engineer to contribute to the design, analysis, integration, and testing of opto-mechanical components for advanced optical systems.

Project Background
The Giant Magellan Telescope represents a groundbreaking advancement in ground-based astronomical observation. With its state-of-the-art technology, it aims to explore the universe's mysteries, including dark matter and the origins of chemical elements.

Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Developing conceptual, preliminary, and final designs for wavefront sensors and metrology systems.
  • Conducting structural performance analyses of opto-mechanical designs.
  • Creating assembly, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Engaging in the procurement process for engineering services and fabrication, including vendor identification and technical specification preparation.
  • Leading a team to integrate, align, and test both small and large opto-mechanical subsystems.
  • Preparing and delivering presentations at technical reviews.

Essential Qualifications
Applicants should possess:

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
  • At least 10 years of experience in designing complex opto-mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency in structural analysis techniques for optimizing designs.
  • Expertise in SolidWorks CAD software.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • A collaborative mindset and commitment to team success.

Preferred Qualifications
Desirable skills include:

  • Experience in designing astronomical instruments or large scientific optical systems.
  • Familiarity with precision metrology systems and optical alignment tools.
  • Knowledge of optics fabrication and testing methodologies.
  • Experience with optical system integration and testing.

Working Conditions
Flexibility to work outside of standard hours and travel as necessary. Candidates should be able to work at high altitudes for extended periods.
