Job Title: Special Investigator

The Department of Industrial Relations is seeking a detail-oriented and inquisitive Special Investigator to join its legal team. This position is located in the Office of the Director Legal Unit (OD Legal) in Oakland, California.

Job Summary:

The Special Investigator will support the work of attorneys by investigating workers' compensation cases involving the Uninsured Employers Benefits Trust Fund (UEBTF), the Subsequent Injuries Benefits Trust Fund (SIBTF), and the Death Without Dependents Fund (DWD). The investigator may also conduct investigations related to civil litigation, public works coverage issues, administrative enforcement proceedings, and other projects.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct thorough investigations and research using online databases and resources, including Clear, Accurint, Lexis, and Westlaw.
  • Request and review public records, conduct research, and locate witnesses for interviews.
  • Prepare written reports summarizing the results of investigations, including analysis of complex information and recommendations.
  • Review legal documents, gather evidence, and prepare correspondence, subpoenas, and other legal pleadings.
Requirements:
  • Experience in gathering and analyzing facts and evidence, researching applicable laws or standards, and writing reports.
  • Ability to write lengthy, well-organized, and well-written reports summarizing complex information.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with attention to detail and ability to work independently.
Working Conditions:

This is a full-time position located in an office environment in the 22-story State office building in Oakland, California. Employees in this position have their own offices and work at desks, using computers extensively for research, email communication, file review, and other purposes.
