Veterinary Assistant

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Veterinary Assistant to join our team at the Veterinary Referral Center of Central Oregon Inc. As a key member of our emergency department, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and supporting our veterinarians in delivering top-notch medical services.
Key Responsibilities- Provide high-quality patient care, including restraint, feeding, and bathing, while ensuring the safety and well-being of both patients and staff.
- Assist veterinarians with medical treatments, procedures, and exams, adhering to our Standard Operating Protocols (SOPs) and maintaining a calm and organized environment.
- Maintain a clean and organized hospital environment, including disinfecting kennels, treatment tables, and exam rooms, as well as restocking supplies and managing waste.
- Collaborate with our team to ensure seamless communication and efficient patient flow, providing updates and information to clients as needed.
- Participate in laboratory procedures, including collecting and handling samples, performing in-house tests, and preparing samples for outside submission.
- Assist with radiology procedures, including positioning patients and taking radiographs and CT scans.
- Support surgical and anesthesia prep, including restraining patients, clipping and preparing surgical sites, and maintaining aseptic technique.
- Technical knowledge in a clinical setting, acquired through apprenticeship, degree pursuit, or professional certification.
- Preferred: hands-on experience working in veterinary general practice, urgent care, or emergency departments.
- Calm and reassuring in stressful situations.
- Medical math skills, including calculating basic formulas for weight conversions and medication dose conversions.
- Knowledge of feline and canine anatomy.
- Patient restraint skills.
- Excellent customer service and people skills.
- Lift and carry up to 40 lbs, and team lift and carry up to 150 lbs.
- Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions, deal with problems with concrete variables, and draw appropriate conclusions.
- Sit, stand, stoop, bend, and walk intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to accurately work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects/containers/machinery.
- Wear all protective gear, including masks, gloves, gowns, hairnets, safety goggles, etc.
- Work for long periods of time with arms extended.
- Work within an environment with high levels of animal sounds, bodily fluids that need disposal, and open wound management.
