Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated School Counselor to join our team at Mount Diablo Unified School District. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive counseling services to students, parents, and staff, focusing on academic success, personal and social development, and career guidance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide individual and group counseling to students, addressing academic, career, and personal/social issues.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and staff to increase student achievement, motivation, and academic learning.
  • Identify students at risk of not graduating on time and provide intervention strategies in partnership with the principal and College/Career Advisors.
  • Coordinate school counseling office and/or center, and provide counseling services through partnership-agencies.
  • Develop and implement youth activities and programs to reduce discipline rates and maximize student attendance and classroom participation.
  • Work with parents and students to identify post-secondary educational and career pathways.
  • Assist individual students with class schedules and development of the master schedule to ensure access to rigorous courses of study.
  • Collaborate with universities and colleges, as well as career programs, to increase student access to post-secondary opportunities.
  • Provide information, guidance, and support to students on college eligibility and requirements, completion of college and financial aid applications, and scholarships.
  • Use data effectively to deliver counseling services to students.
  • Assist in the development of school climate and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) at the school site.
  • Participate in SST, IEP, and Section 504 meetings for students.
  • Focus on student strengths and equity when working with students, families, and staff from diverse cultural, ethnic, social, and economic backgrounds.
Requirements
  • Possession of Pupil Personnel Services Credential (PPSC) with Authorization in School Counseling, School Psychology, or School Social Work.
  • Knowledge of effective strategies to identify and address the educational needs of students in public education and access career training opportunities, universities, and colleges.
  • Understanding of child and adolescent development and ability to use this information to provide effective counseling services.
  • Ability to work effectively with all segments of the educational community and general public.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and decision making.
  • Knowledge of the IEP and Section 504 process and related school district policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of practices and procedures related to school discipline, including alternatives to suspension and expulsion.
  • Knowledge of practices and supports to develop a culturally responsive learning environment.
Working Conditions

The School Counselor will work in a fast-paced educational environment, interacting with students, parents, and staff on a daily basis. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively in a team setting, exercise good judgment, and make sound decisions.

The School Counselor will be required to work a standard school day, with occasional evening and weekend events. The position requires a valid California driver's license and the ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
