About the Role

The South Dakota Department of Health is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Laboratory Program Assistant to join our team at the South Dakota Public Health Laboratory in Pierre, South Dakota. As a Laboratory Program Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting the diverse needs of the laboratory, including unpackaging clinical, environmental, and forensic samples, inventory management, data entry and data management, and mailroom activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the laboratory's daily operations, including sample preparation, data management, and inventory control.
  • Develop and maintain familiarity with laboratory information technology systems, including electronic test ordering systems and inventory management systems.
  • Work collaboratively with laboratory staff to meet daily goals and objectives.
  • Operate commercial dishwashers, ovens, and autoclaves, as well as scales and balances.
  • Package and ship infectious substances and laboratory supplies.
  • Adhere to federal and state confidentiality policies and observe all aspects of chemical, biological, and occupational safety.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Experience working in a laboratory or commercial kitchen environment preferred.
  • Ability to train in and become a user of laboratory information technology systems.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work as a team player.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new situations.
